Sorry for being too interested, can't help it, but...
So it is dedicated, do you people have full rights on it?
Or is it a shared host?
What kinds of access do you guys have to the box?
Which distro is it? |

Dedicated hosting is not as reliable as hosting it locally, so may I suggest that you build a computer manually? However, dedicated servers ARE good for their nice connection and speed (depending on the host). |

What I meant by full rights is "root access" heh.
I was just interested in the box though, nothing more. |

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, ok????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Someone who doesn't know anything about computers isn't going to get a high speed internet connection.
Data centers for colocated and/or dedicated servers are better environments for servers than at someone's bedrooms.
I doubt you'd have professional service, security, power generators and advanced temperature control in your "server room".
Colocated hosting allows you to mess at the physical server at the data center while the server is hanging on the big backbone.
You could control it with some remote administration software.
Is an OC12 or whatever even available for non-business people?
Also, who cares about porn? You must be one of those "warez" guys.
If I were the owner of a hosting company, or however it offers hosting to people I'd reject porn or warez too (except if the costumer would want a legal sex site hosted, but that's different to what you probably would want to do). |

Why do all these people here quote the (complete) last post?
It's not necessary to quote the last post!
Only quote when giving a reply without quote might cause confusion or if you're replying to a specific part of the last post (or any other earlier post).
Everyone here can actually read, some don't do a really good job on it, but we all know the order of posts in threads, and we can all look back up to what was said before.
When you're in conversation with someone, you don't quote everything he/she said and then reply to it, do you?
I won't whine about your punctuation, heh.
Anyway, good luck with the server and 50 cent. |

Of course. A service called LightPath offers it and more for people that dwell in the city, the metropolitan. Also, a house can match up to a "server building" easily; just add the necessary components, and you're there. |

What has my nationality have to do with your preference to argue with? Gtfo.
You don't "own" anyone by just acting more like an idiot each time.
Haha, sure let's easily add the components.
A professional hosting company would always own it.
Wouldn't doing such things be a little overkill for personal use?
I'd guess if you'd want to match the pro's up, you'd have to do the same as them.
You can't be your own security guard while you're asleep.
I refuse to argue with idiots, mike. |

Do you even know how much the OC-12 circuits itself cost? It's not cheap. Housing your server in a datacenter would be WAY more reliable than housing one in your house/bedroom. Next to the connection itself, the power has to also be redundant. I'm not talking about one of those small, APC back-up batteries, but an actual generator which again, is not exactly cheap.
If you want control of your own physical machine, Co-locating it would be your best choice. However, you’ll find that bandwidth is a generally a little more expensive.
Comparing a datacenter to a house, is like comparing a Ferrari with a 1989 Honda Civic. |

Once again I point in the direction of my server. You simply need to find a data center with people that know what they're doing. |

I believe MS-DOS and the former SSN had its own datacenter, but he claims to own the actual company that hosts the datacenter. Anyways, it seemed pretty good in performance on an OC-12 connection. |

You all realize that he was full of bullshit right? Anyway, everyone at any datacenter can all say "I have an OC12 omgz rox0r" or "I have an OC48" or OC192..whatever they want (yes they're all real). However, nobody is really getting that whole OC12 connection. They're simply on a 10 mbit or 100 mbit port with multiple backbone providers. The upstream providers are all on those connections and the ISP siphons out that bandwidth to you; the customer.
Also, an OC3 which is 155 mbit/s costs between $20,000 and $45,000 a month. Most places won't even give you an estimated price for anything higher than an OC3. |

Go for it. And even if the local server doesn't work out, a dedicated one isn't bad. |
