I cant seem to connect to the new version of asss, it just kicks me right out of (not just the zone) continuum,
Anyone else got this problem?
I tried doing a upgrade, that didnt work, then i tried unzipping to a new folder and running as is, with unmodified conf's & that didnt work.
Heres from the console running asss straight from a extracted asss-1.1.2.tar.gz
running in folder /usr/games/asss-1.1.2 as root
the client downloaded the news file & map as soon as the download was completed of the map it kicked me
asss 1.1.2 built at Sep 10 2003 01:55:08

Continuum probably blew up because it saw an invalid map or settings. Check to make sure that the map is actually valid and there. As for the setting conf files, it they are stock ones, they should be fine.

I recommend you not doing that. ASSS could easily have a buffer overflow, and since it is open source, I wouldn't be surprised if someone found one and could abuse it in the future. So running as root is asking for trouble. Plus, the idea in Linux systems is that you never actually need to run any program as root, unlike in Windows, which can help keep the system safer.
You should create an account that has only write access to asss's directory, so if there ever would be a problem with it in the future, the worst damage is that you could lose just that information, not the whole system.

What i faild to say was it was running fine under asss 1.1.0 no problem
Tried upgrading the binaries & running it & got the problem. read from here
then i tried running it straight from a extracted asss-1.1.2.tar.gz extracted into a new folder

I am fully aware of this & the securty on linux, i have been working on linux for many years now, as for running as root, it saves a lot of hasle, & i am running/testing asss 1.1.2 on a test pc "wile not connected to the internet" on a standalone network & i have no worries from someone trying to abuse a securty bug in asss when i am running asss on my standalone network.
one thing i dont understand is how running it as root would make it more easy to have a buffer overflow hence against a normal user, i am gussing you know about this side of it comapired to me with your programing experance, so there could be somthing i missed. i was running asss 1.10 as root no problems

If you get a buffer overflow error in a program, it may become possible to gain access to the user's account on the box, and if that user is root, you are screwed, but if it's a normal user, you have a securtiy breach, but not a total comprimize. _________________ Hyperspace Owner

The idea is this in simple terms. Someone could send a faulty packet to a program, and it overflows a variable, so the data gets placed into the stack. Then, when the function returns, the stack is called back, but since you can place any data there you want, you can have it do something you wouldn't want. Like say do "rm -rf *". For a single user that has write-only in ASSS directory, you lose only ASSS. For root, you lose everything.
Plus, since it is still isn't complete and 100% testing-stable, it could have an error in it somewhere where it may screw around with data. And if you start to use other people's modules, you have a greater chance of someone having a bug in there that will edit files that it shouldn't.
As for the new reason not working: Can you connect into the zone using the VIE client?

If u mean the old client VIE made?, then i dont know, i never had that client
Ive only used continuum,
I was assuming because continuum worked with 1.10 ok then it would work ok with 1.1.2

Other stuff to try is removing security, lagaction, contenc and encrypt1, use nullenc instead. Looking at the log the problem seems to be with the security module anyway.

You'll stop using root after you are trying to type "rm -r /home/testuser/" but accidently slip off the "/" button and hit enter, and the comp does "rm -r /" to delete your whole system.
