hopefully this will be my last question about this but anyway is it possible to run two modems in the same house? because i got my desktop tower fixed and i need internet for it and i dont have a cord that can run the distance so im wondering if i can. It is not off the same line but two different phone jack plugs. Could i use the second one and plug in the cord to my desktop and get internet connection? if so are there any special things i have to do? oh and please dont say buy a longer cord because i dont wanna cord running all around my house.

Oh yeah and also is there a way to have the second modem without paying any fees?

i know this is subspace form i was just hoping youll could help

Unless you have two different phone lines, you can't. The modems will say bad words to each other and they won't work.

There is an up-and-coming technology known as "wireless networking" that could solve your problem. You would be able to share your internet connection between computers without wires! They're still working out the bugs though.

In all seriousness though, unless your geographical location precludes you from getting high-speed internet, you should switch. AT&T is required to provide $10/month DSL if you're in a coverage area. Dial-up is sooo slow!

No it's not. It just wasn't meant for gaming. sa_tongue.gif

ISDN is what you call internet when you want to use multiple modems / multiple phone lines for 1 IP address, which results in physically and literally x times faster than a single channel dialup connection (where x is the number of modems/phone lines you are using in total combination).

However, because nobody knows ISDN even exists and therefore uses it, demand is so low for ISDN that to get 16 KB/s Dedicated ISDN is like $100+ per month.

Windows XP supports using multiple modems simultaneously, but it all depends on how many phone lines you have/are using, and whether your ISP supports multiple connections on one user account. icon_smile.gif

Yknow, why can't they improve on dial-up and make it like broadband? The only difference is the frequencies...

Yeah, I know, but we get a fast speed via DSL and it is connected through a phone line.

The FCC regulates the frequencies that can be sent through standard telephone network. DSL doesn't operate through the telephone network, and only uses the lines. I'm not sure exactly where the distinction is to the FCC, but that's the general thrust of the issue.

To add to Brains topic, the FCC limits the power of modems to about 52k. So if you have a 56k modem, you'll never reach that speed in the US.

And besides, from the research I have done, the only time you can possibly reach those speeds is if the phone lines in your area are 100% brand new and such; for the most part, you'll only achieve 28.8k to 33k speeds (which is about 2 KB/s to 3 KB/s).
