Ok, first of all, is it normal that someone has reformatted partition, reinstalled XP Home, and they don't get the 30 days for activation period? Is it possible they did not reformat correctly?
edit: just talked with my dad, he says he did a NTFS full reformat... I don't see how that wouldn't have worked...
And they get an error when connecting to microsoft server (something like "Could not activate Windows online...", after "Checking connectivity...") ... The license is legal. I am guessing it is because their network driver isn't installed correctly (or not installed at all) , so how would they install such a driver, without using windows? I don't know which card they have, are there some generic drivers that would work? Or maybe just plugging the computer directly on the modem, without going through router, would help?
After windows is started on the problem computer, the other computer connected to the router can see it on the network... so the connection should be correct, right?
I need help as quick as possible thanks
That's my parent's computer, and I'm not there now, so I can only help them remotely, which makes the task more difficult _________________ (Insert a bunch of dead links here) |

Um... I've got an XP CD that DOESN'T require activation, if that would help. |

'permanently' ... that's what they say everytime they find a way to disable it...
but anyways, I have a legal key, I want to use it.
I guess they could do it by phone, if nothing else works ... |

If the computer comes with a Dell/HP/Compaq/other branded CD, then you won't have to activate XP. If you have an XP cd from microsoft (out of a box) then you will have to activate it. _________________ Hyperspace Owner

well, they have to activate it... they cant open any session
and they tried by phone... and the guy thinks its not a valid licence... wtf
They have lost their own licence (or ripped off the sticker, pretty dumb eh?)... but I had a XP Home liscence with my computer that I never validated, I gave it to them... I installed a XP Pro version, so i didnt need that one
Does the licence have anything to do with language? My licence was for XP english, while they have XP french, would that change anything?
If the CD and the licence are for different servicepacks, could that cause the product key to be invalid?

If you have a valid license, call Microsoft yourself, not them. They are very friendly, just explain your situation and they'll validate you without a problem. It is a toll-free number as well. |

Call your parents, get the validation key from them. Call Microsoft yourself with the key, talk to them, they'll repeat back the code you enter. Call your parents, they'll type it in, validation. |

You can try this:
Search for the folder named "dllcache" then unclick all permissions that should work |

for the 3rd time, they cannot log in in any way... it REQUIRES the activation to do anything. They did not get the 30 days period, why? Even a second installation should give you 30 days right? Especially after reformatting... |

The only thing I can tell you is you can either pirate a copy, or use a free operating system.
Windows really wants money. Do you think they want to help the people? It's kind of like the Catholic church back in the renaissance days. They were more concerned with money than they were with the people. Free operating systems are different. There might not be a number to call, but there is a community where you can post.
I'm guessing the people using Windows will be very computer illiterate. Windows is probably right for them, in that case. I wish people would try something new.
Pirate or use something else. They are forcing us to stoop this low. |

1- it's not for me
2- no my dad is not gonna use Linux because he has absolutely no reason to do so, and Flight Simulator probably doesn't work on Linux, so no
3- Linux fanboys annoy me
4- I gave up helping them out, so bleh They took the computer to somewhere for repair cause after the 3 reformatting they did, it was now jamming on the welcome screen... anyways... |

My brother-in-law works at a space place. They do space simulations with space shuttles and things like that. They use RedHat for almost everything. They found it more stable. I bet there is a way to either emulate it or find one for Linux.
I see your points though. He probably doesn´t need Linux. Good luck. |

I like Linux. It is cool. I use it. Therefore I am cool.
But you don't need it. _________________ This help is informational only. No representation is made or warranty given as to its content. User assumes all risk of use. Cyan~Fire assumes no responsibility for any loss or delay resulting from such use.

This is the internet. Ergo, grammar is optional. Consequently, your argument is flawed. _________________
