They'll keep providing security patches for the old one. I'm sort of done with phpbb for now, as it is modded to hell by myself now, so there is no simple upgrade purpose for me. The effort to upgrade the forums, despite what I said in the past, is now equal to that of moving to a different system. Right now, there is nothing that looks like much of an upgrade than what I already have. And the only thing that looks good in the future is Titan, which is not done, and may or may not even be released to people.
Phpbb 3.0's features looks to have some of the more popular extensions built into the system, designed to allow a bit more control over idiot users (bots/spammers), finer control over permissions (extension fixed this, why the newest subforums allowed stickies, forgot to set that bit), maybe a better search engine (really needed, I use Google more than the built in one), and built in caching for templates (one of the slowest parts of the forums right now, our IO isn't that fast). The only part I really like about any of those upgrades now is just the template caching, which I assume I could just hack into these forums when I get the free time. |
