I want to run a server so how would I bring about in doing this?
Do I just need?:
A computer (with good ram)
Internet conenction
And Windows Server 2003?
And then I am set to like host zones, or websites etc? Or there something else that I am not getting?

You need a computer with a decent internet connection. The chances that you'll get a lot of traffic at all (and at least at the beginning) are pretty low, so the average P4-ish processor with the average 512MB-ish set of RAM should do you fine. If you really want a beast of a server, go ahead and splurge, but considering your post here my guess is you should do a lot more research first.
The big deal is the bandwidth, though - you'll have to pay for it.
As for OS, I s'pose if you want to use Windows, there are worse options than Server 2003, but...
If this is going to be a server for SubSpace, consider ASSS over subgame - then you can use a real operating system (something Unixy) instead of Windows.
If this is a webserver we're talking about, then there's no excuse for using Windows at all - get a BSD or Linux distribution. |

It really depends on how many people will be in the server. Are you looking at just hosting it on your home internet? Or are you looking at hosting it on a dedicated server? Dedicated servers can be expensive. Ranging from $40-200. If you are just going to host one zone, it might be best for you just to go about looking for a host...however if you are going to host more then one, then your best bet is to get a server.
Anyways...
A subspace server does not require many resources...Thus, the processor/ram/etc does not matter. The only time that you'll need a stronger processor/ram is when you start pulling in a lot of people. So, a 300-450mhz computer should work just fine from what I am assuming you are wanting. 64-128mb of ram would work...I suggest, however, atleast a 10gb Harddrive.
---
Go with windows for a server OS. Yet again, if you are hosting this on your home network, the OS version does not matter. Windows for Subgame, Linux for AS3 (more people use subgame, fyi). Just a note, if you are going to get the server at a datacenter, sometimes Windows 2003 does NOT work...no one knows why, however, there are exceptions to those datacenters...IE, Superb, The Planet, LiquidWeb, Layeredtech... _________________ I know that I myself cannot do anything, that I will fall, and that I am a sinful man, but I know that I can do ANYTHING through God Almighty, whom strengthens me. |

Can you give us the stats of the spare (processor/ram/hd size) along with how many bots you might want to host? |
