It seems finally somebody decided to port Subspace for a new system, the Playstation Portable. If many of you do not know PSP is the new system by SONY, w/internet capabilites.

Quote:

Valk has released an alpha version of his homebrew game for the PSP, PSPace. PSPace is a port of the 2d space shooter game for the PC, 'Subspace'. Subspace was a freeware PC game in the space shooter genre, and features a top-down view. The original Subspace was a Massively Multiplayer Online game (MMO), so could we see Internet play in future versions? Watch this space and perhaps we'll find out. Here's what Valk said:

"This is an alpha of a project that I have been toying around with for a few months. It doesn't have much functionality but I would like some feedback as far as to continue work on it. It's the beginnings of a clone of Subspace, a game that has been around for more than 10 years for the PC. Either way, any feedback would be greatly appreciated."

This is just an alpha, and currently there are no objectives or missions, but you can explore the map and get used to the controls. It's just a small taster of what's to come!

Except it's harder to hack a PSP game than a PC game, I'm sure.

how much is actually implemented?

The screenshot shows a ship flying around so I assume you can fly around with a warbird.

Can you play all 8 ships and spectator mode?
Can you collide with walls?
Does colliding with walls slow you down?
Can you fire weapons (bullets or bombs or both)?
Can weapons bounce off walls?
Can you customize which map is used (give it a .lvl file)?
Are there items (repels, bursts, thors, rockets)?
Are there greens?
Are there wormholes / doors?
Are there lvz?
Are there enemies?
Are there any other ships?
Is there chat?
Is there any of the pseudo-windows (playerlists, radar) ?
Is there any hint of online play (or offline, for that matter)?

------------

well looking though the files in windows answered a lot of the questions... looks like the map is .dat file which is ascii comma seperated values in the form x,y,tileid on each line. There's a single tileset provided and single ship image, which is shrunk to make the ships 18x18 pixels in size. Still, I wonder if the collisions work.

Can you play all 8 ships and spectator mode? - No, only warbird.
Can you collide with walls? - No, they only have 1 tile and its fly over.
Does colliding with walls slow you down? - Cant collide with walls yet.
Can you fire weapons (bullets or bombs or both)? - No weapons.
Can weapons bounce off walls? - No weapons, nor solid walls.
Can you customize which map is used (give it a .lvl file)? - No .lvl file, PSP runs of a EBOOT file for the game, im not exactly sure how he got it on the psp though.
Are there items (repels, bursts, thors, rockets)? - No items at all.
Are there greens? - No pickups at all
Are there wormholes / doors? - None
Are there lvz? - None
Are there enemies? - None
Are there any other ships? - None
Is there chat? - Nope
Is there any of the pseudo-windows (playerlists, radar) ? - Just one screen.
Is there any hint of online play (or offline, for that matter)? - Possibly offline, not sure about online...

I had a look at developing for PSP, but couldn't find a decent emulator and guide. I don't want to install a whole tool chain from source with cygwin if at the end of it all I have to actually buy a PSP.

How come the ship is shrunk but the tiles don't appear to be shrunk too?

And now to compare these criteria to my client:
Can you play all 8 ships and spectator mode? yes
Can you collide with walls? yes
Does colliding with walls slow you down? yes
Can you fire weapons (bullets or bombs or both)? yes
Can weapons bounce off walls? yes
Can you customize which map is used (give it a .lvl file)? yes
Are there items (repels, bursts, thors, rockets)? no, yes, yes, yes
Are there greens? yes
Are there wormholes / doors? no
Are there lvz? no
Are there enemies? yes
Are there any other ships? yes
Is there chat? yes
Is there any of the pseudo-windows (playerlists, radar) ? yes
Is there any hint of online play (or offline, for that matter)? yes

No, you can't have a copy of my client and no I'm not working on it anymore.

Edit: When I said "my client", I meant a different program than PSPace.

You have that for the PSP? If so I dont think you have one with all that. And the version that this guy is working on, I looked in the place where the source was and saw the tilesset is the same as regular continuum. So all the tiles will be the same size.

His client is not for the PSP. I'm pretty sure he was working on it before the PSP was released.

SubSpace doesn't need a PSP client, SubSpace need a new PC client.

Who cares.

This guy got further than any of us have with a PSP client. If he has the freetime and drive to attempt to make such a client, good for him -- Im certainly not going to do it.

Smong:
No offence or anything (well scratch that, I do mean to offend a little bit), but I dont see why you felt the need to bring up your own PC client in a discussion about a PSP client (which is being developed by someone whos NOT a member of this forum). People have been asking about porting to the PSP for ages, and someones finally doing it. I dont see the need for the pseudo attention whoring.

Assassin:
Even if he has the tileset exactly how it exists on the PC version, his application can scale it down at runtime. Thats going to be the only way hes going to overcome the resolution limitation.
Infact, if it ever gets online, hes going to NEED to do scaling, as everything will be sent under the assumption that its a PC client.

Well, maybe we should initiate contact with this person and convince them to forsaken a PSP development (since sony is the devil and all) and focus on PC, where the game originated and actually has a player base in need of service.

Well, lets see:
PC - has an existing playerbase with a fully functional (though in need of updating) client.

PSP - No client, no playerbase.

Besides, there are already many people who have written alternate/replacement/whatever clients. Get one of those people (Hi, Smong!) to work on a replacement for continuum, let this guy work on the PSP version.

I was suggesting I could (help) make a PSP client if I had a working SDK.

If you want to get in PSP development the best place I know is here:
http://noobz.eu/

This is the main site for all HomeBrew applications.

http://noobz.eu/ seems to just be a coding group that created a tool to run homebrew more easily (called eLoader). I can't see any guides on their site about how to start developing or how to dev without owning a psp, they don't even have a forum.
