The Server Help steps to be a better poster - Mine GO BOOM

I will learn to put descriptions into my posts.
I will learn to save image files in a format that best fits the content instead of huge uncompressed jpegs.
I will be a better person.

Why not PNG? The new versions of MSPaint support it, MS Photo Editor supports it, GIMP supports it (although with a long load time). You have no excuse!

There are tons of programs that come with support for other formats (ACDsee, Photoshop, etc.).

The only advantage GIF has over PNG is animation.

PNG is a better choice for any other use. You can save it with a 256 color palette and beat GIF in size or you can save it with 16 million colors and not only eliminate the need for dithering but you can add alpha-channel transparency. Plus GIF is proprietary, although IBM's patent expires on August 11th.

No animation = get bent.
Also, PNG has a tendancy to throw a darkening blanket over the lighting in the original bmp.
