Does anyone know how to modify the core file "PING.EXE" in the C:\WINDOWS folder? Basically, do you have any programs that can modify applications (.exe files)???
Also, when one is being pinged, is there a program that can trace where that ping comes from, and the IP address of the pinger? |

No, that's illegal. You can get another ping client, search for "ping" on cnet.

netstat; it comes with windows. but they have to have just been in the process of pinging you for you to catch it, and it's kinda hard to decipher all the info it might spit out. |

Why?
My own version of PING is screwed up. The -w command (timeout) has a limit of 30 seconds, and I want to increase that number, since my computer is so slow. Also, I want to decrease the buffer size (-l), since it's stuck at 300 bytes, and I want it to be at MOST 50 bytes, going back to my slow computer problem.
For what?
I'm setting up a test server, and I want to ping it to make sure it's up. My computer isn't connecting to it, and I want to see if it's my computer's problem, or the server's. |

what takes longer than 30 seconds to ping? how can you play subspace with that computer? a ping around the world should not take 30 seconds. make sure to turn off all the other stuff using your internet connection before pinging. |

Just to say, it takes Windows about 4 minutes to detect my father's WinXP machine on the network when looking for shares.. unplug his machine from the network, list of 5 computers appear instantly. Oh the spyware they install on that thing.. |

Its probably becasue his computer is the browse master, but you can't be sure. it could be that he $IPC share is being served VERY slowly. If it only happens when you are looking for computers on the network, then its the browse master stuff. If you are looking for the shares, it the speed in which the $IPC share is served. _________________ Hyperspace Owner

I know the exact problem, but if i fix it, it will be screwed up in atleast a day. As i said, they have spyware to the extreme that i tell them to not install ("but Kazaa lite said to upgrade!"), and try to remove some (Spybot), and every so often, even just reformat the whole machine.
Back to the real point: >30 seconds is an eon in computer terms, and i doubt anything would bother to wait that long. Most timeouts for things now-a-days are down to 10 seconds or so. |

No computer capable of running continuum will operate that slowly on the network under normal conditions. You should try and find out what else is using your memory/cpu/bandwidth. |
