I use the following feature a lot. Infact, I would say it is the most used/important feature to me when browsing any forum.

View posts since last visit (1)

However I have noticed in the recent past that these forums are terrible when it comes to that. It is very, very, buggy. First of all, since my last visit, it does not count or catch all the new posts. So if it displays the above for me, it might be just a few of many that were new since my last visit.

Second, I have occassionally had the following error when clicking on that. Today I clicked on it when it said there were about 26 new posts from my last visit, and instead brought me to this error:

No topics or posts met your search criteria.

It works off your session. If your session times out (15 minutes I think) or you log off, all posts since your session time was last updated are counted as new posts.

If you open up Server Help in a tab, and browse other pages for a bit, then come back and click, guess what, you are now in a new session. This is how phpbb does history of what posts you've viewed before. Newer forums actually keep track of your thread views for you on the server, but fitting that into here is more trouble than it is worth. My recommendation is to just bookmark New Post Search or use the RSS feed to keep better track of new posts. It works well in Google Reader and any other RSS client.

Code: Show/Hide
SELECT post_id, topic_id
FROM $PHPBB_POSTS_TABLE
WHERE post_time >= $userdata['user_lastvisit'];

I have not had trouble with just going through each forum and clicking on new posts. In the past few months, we only average around 20 posts per day, and most users don't have to bother looking at specific forums. Most of the time, if there happen to be a lot of posts, I'll just click into the Zone Hosting site, make sure there isn't 50 posts by one specific user on the forum page, and then skip reading any of them. I do try to read every other post on the site.

Hey MGB, when I go shopping with a woman, my bank account's credit decreases and decreases more than I expect.

Second, I always end up buying more for them than for myself.

I already went to Oprah.com and I've seen all Dr Phil's shows, but they won't help!
This must be a bug.

Hmm, pre-bitch e-jerk, haha, interesting. Maybe after I cleaned my room.

They're going to celebrate her birthday somewhere else now, in a crazy Dutch fantasy land or amusement park, something like a fake Disney.
She wanted me to come too, but that'd be too weird now.

I just don't like this "New Posts" system at all. I recieved one of those error pages this time and obviously The Apache's post above was a new one that had gone unaccounted for. I bet there had been other posts. I really hate having to open a new tab for each forum on these forums and go through the trouble of finding out the new posts (I'm on dialup, which makes it worse).

Just curious, MGB, have you ever considered vBulletin?

He's talked about this before. He has hacked up these boards so much by now it's too late to switch, even though he dislikes phpbb.
