Trash Talk - Bloat

There are two programs on my computer, true and false, which simply return 0 and 1, respectively. I.e.
Code: Show/Hide
int main(void) { return 0; }

So I decided to see how large their executables are.

Code: Show/Hide
$ ls -l false true
-r-xr-xr-x   1 root  wheel  34060 Dec 25  2005 false
-r-xr-xr-x   1 root  wheel  34060 Dec 25  2005 true

The timestamp is kind of weird too...

I don't see your point... Is this some sort of question, or is it showing off.

Also, that program you gave, pretty much does nothing. There is no input or output. All it does is enter the main function and then terminate on the first line.

Maybe I'm missing something?

Yeah, stop showing off!

C programs have a somewhat large base size, but it expands pretty slowly. I did get the same program to 24K, though.

I'm commenting on a program that comes with the operating system OS X (intel) in /usr/bin, in others in /bin or whatnot. 33K to return 0. Just simply writing a C program that does the same thing makes a 16K executable on the same system, which can be stripped down to 13K with strip. On Debian it's 3K.

You think I'm trying to show off? Huh? WTF?

Now I'm missing something.

Oh, your testing and finding out information. I didn't really understand what you were doing, and there was no question, so I saw now point in it. That's good your testing it out on your own, but try a search next time (unless you want hands on).
I'm sorry, I didnt't really think you were showing off with such a simple program, but now I see it's your test subject. Sorry about that, mate.

MGB, May I take this moment to suggest that you copy the banning system I implemented on the forums you host for me?

Also, can you ban blah-er?

I host forums for you?

Oy.

I understood Sam's original post without any problems...

I was only making fun of blah-er.

I totally agree. blah-er needs to be banned, really.

Your brother, rather. In any event, I assumed you would have pretty much full access anyway.

I do, but I don't really pay much attention to Subspace related things that don't directly interact with me (here and the council). So, after browsing what we actually were hosting for people, I noticed hybrid.shanky.com. Being lazy, I didn't bother to actually look at anything you've applied there at all, but am hoping you keep that thing up to date.

Plus, why would I ban people? The few times something bad comes up, I've made due.

Because the ignore function still leaves those lame "youve ignored this person" box and not even you can deny that the triad of bdwinsalt, blah-er and quanchi amount to nothing more than an annoying IRC script kiddie crew. Hell, I'm somewhat suprised I haven't been ddos-ed for some of the flames I've directed at them.

Besides, I wouldn't have brought it up if it didn't provide some level of entertainment. I modded the banning system so it works much like an in-game silence. They can post and do everything normally, except no one other than them sees it.

I refer to that as a 'hell ban', which has been on these forums for over two years now. Currently, the list is empty, but it has been used a couple of times. Modded it so that specific posts made during that time are invisible to all other people or could be every post by that user. Came in handy sometimes, but used very, very rarely.

EDIT: Buy me off? For what? If you don't care for how these forums work, nothing is stopping you from leaving. If you want something specific, ask me and I'll choose to do it or not, with or without bribes. As for changing how the ignore system works, I've never ignored any person other than during tests, so I don't interact with the ignore system much. But I do ignore threads (upto 20 right now).

Good to know.

Now then, exactly how much does it take to buy you off?

does the ignore thread still only ignore the oldest 20 threads, essentially only ignoring a single thread as soon as you reach 20?
Mine GO BOOM - Mon Sep 11, 2006 6:58 pm
Post subject:
No, you get 50 ignored threads. Once you hit 50, any new ignores will unignore the oldest thread. You are currently sitting on the limit, you try and ignore two different threads and tell me which one(s) were removed when you ignored two new threads.

To view all the threads you are currently ignoring, its in the View Ignored List, under XX thread(s).

Eh, nm this post. icon_smile.gif If only I knew who the 2 users are who are ignoring me. :-/

It says I have 50 topics ignored but on the search page it only returns 48.

Ha ha, now its your turn to misinterpret a joke.

I was hinting at my desire to never get on your bad side and thus, not find myself on the end of the very thing I was requesting for blah-er.
