ASSS Questions - Paintball Reloaded and AS3

Post subject: Paintball Reloaded and AS3
I have been trying, along with a few others, to convince ThunderJam(owner) to let us convert the zone into AS3. See, because of the type of CTF he has set up, the bots have to go through a lot of work, and the bots don't work very well. I personally think AS3 would stop problems with bots, as long as he could get a competent coder. We've also been considering adding things to the zone, such as a Medic class/ship, which would also be much easier with AS3, but he's set against it. He thinks all the players will have to go download .39 and he doesn't think they will do it, he thinks it's buggy, and it will be hard for players to work with. I was hoping a few of you could tell me a few things to tell him about AS3 that might change his mind.

It's no different for players than subgame, almost all player commands are client-side. The only difference is for the staff. The only player consideration would be needing .39, but what serious SS player doesn't have it these days?

Yes, that's what I said, there's no difference client-side. But he asserts that his zone is full of noobs (at least he admits it) and he's worried they won't be able to get it. I personally think that anyone that isn't capable of installing .39 aren't capable of playing SS, but maybe that's just me. He's also got Chambahs trying to tell him AS3 zones never work, and keeps telling me to find a zone that switched to AS3 and didn't die. Oh, and apparently, HZ doesn't exist.

ASSS Is not stable enough for LARGE zones, plus w/ events there is no point of switching yet.

LOL?

Ani, your main problem is getting a decent coder.

Light Hazard is working on it, I'm pretty sure he'll be able to.
Agurus, don't be jealous of PB.

I'm not 100% sure of this but the latest asss allows cont38 if you just click no to the 'do you want to update' dialog.

You'll need to write a custom logging filter if you go this route because the security module will keep showing security warnings. The filter would just echo the warnings except for the cont38 related ones, it would also have to have an option to kick players the produce whatever security warnings get through.

Smong, I believe it only allows that if you're staff.

Yes, PB will never work with ASSS because there are no coders, LH and purge cant code a decent asss module, i seen their zone they had together. Theres not many asss coders to begin with. And lets say you do find a decent coder and he makes a module, if anything ever goes wrong with it when the coder isnt in-game, it can cause serious problems/downtime for the zone until they come back.

For PB, ASSS isnt too good. Now HS on the other hand is full of coders: Brain, Distort, Nikon, and Sai, maybe they arent there anymore but you catch my drift.

Also if you do find the coder, he isnt going to want to do the whole zone coding by himself. The reason why HS is getting stuff done is because of numerous people working on the zone. IMO if it were just brain by himself, HS wouldnt be where it is today.

Ah yes you're right. I thought something was wrong when it let me in with cont38.

Chambahs: There's absolutely no difference between MERVBot plugins and ASSS modules in the way that you said there were. If a person can learn to make a proper MERVBot plugin, then a person can definitely learn to make a proper ASSS plugin. It's much easier, there just aren't as many newb copy+paste guides out there.

Either way, you can switch to ASSS and still use your bots for a while. The improved zone management features are enough all by themselves to make that beneficial.

You could always give it a try, with a coder. Nothing ventured is nothing gained.

ASSS is simply a superior product. There are so many really nice things that it does that I've lost track of them. I'll try and recount some of them, but I'm sure to forget about the ones I can no longer imagine living without.

You can recycle just the arena with ?recyclearena rather than asking everyone to leave and come back, and having to kick afk speccers out of the zone. And when it does become necessary to recycle the entire zone, it comes back up in a second or two, rather than the 15-20 seconds for subgame. And you can take the mod chat back over my cold, dead body.

Players have come to love some of the things it allows, like /?sendfile and "?arena -t" and "?arena -a".

Chatnet is also a big plus for zones. You don't have to allow the general insecurity of allowing SS clients while still allowing people to use chat only clients. And for most players, getting on the VIP.txt just isn't a possibility.

Setcm allows finer control over silencing, allowing us to remove a problem player from the public chats while still allowing us to talk with him via PMs.

Even without the biggest plus, custom modules, I would still have switched Hyperspace to ASSS. With the custom modules and a coder to build 'em, it's simply a no-brainer.

Don't forget Muskrat biggrin.gif

I think the reason most people try to badmouth asss is that they are scared. Scared because they are comfortable with subgame and don't want to have to learn a completely new system. Scared because they realize what it can mean for their zone that has to remain on subgame. (Or in Kolar's case they just made crazy inferences) ASSS is the future. Viva la revolution!

Now, if I can only convince TJ of that. He's still afraid it will cause a decline in his pop. I'll see if I can get him to list his problems with it so I can get you guys to disprove them all.
Smong - Sun Jan 29, 2006 10:58 am
Post subject:
Why don't you and the others you mentioned just go ahead and convert the zone to asss. Then when you have it all running as before you can show it to TJ to see if he likes it or not. Even if he doesn't like it you would have gained experience and go and help other zones.

what modules would you need to convert it?
Animate Dreams - Sun Jan 29, 2006 4:23 pm
Post subject:
Um... just a CTF module, one that can do 1 flag for each team. I think that's the only thing PB would need an extra module for. They've already got a bot set up to do it, so I'm sure they could figure out how to make the module.
Smong - Sun Jan 29, 2006 5:59 pm

The last module I publicly released was a ctf module...

Also doesn't PB have creds, implying gambling and possibly inventories?
Cyan~Fire - Mon Jan 30, 2006 12:02 am

It only has creds for buying stuff, I think. But I'm all in favor of just using points for that, it helps balance stuff.

they gamble too. the coin flip and the slots. you can also buy things that make arena messages and "splats"

Spyed, they deleted that scene because it didn't fit into the plot. Plus, Lucas had to stop and explain every time what it was and why he included something that didn't yet exist into his movie.

Oh, and paintball should switch to asss.
