Ok... I've followed every step in "How To" section of shanky.com to the letter. I open Subbill... it looks alright, then i open subgame2 and it connects to billing. I open continuum and download my zone. There is no ping next to the zone and I can't enter, getting an error that says it's not connected to the server. But nothing changes in the Subbill and subgame2 prompts. What am I doing wrong in editing the server.ini file? I'll send it to ya if you like. Any advice at all is greatly appreciated. _________________ -we were all new at this once... |

Do you use any magic gizmo to connect to the internet? (router or stuff)
If yes, then forward the server port and server port + 1 to your computer.
(If server is 100 then forward 100 and 101) _________________ 3y3 4m l33t h4x0r

you ALSO need to edit your zone.dat(in your cont folder) to use your local IP. |

It should be in your hub/router manual
Basically what it does is when someone tries to connect to the hub/router/whatever, it forwards the connectino to your computer, instead of ignoring it |

I am having the same problem.
I'm still not sure what you mean regarding the port's though.
I changed the IP in the zones.dat file to my local.
Also, on another note, I am currently runnning stuff off my PC.
I assume there is a way to place onto a web server rather than my PC, and I do have a webspace to upload whatever to, but how do I do so?
I'm not really sure what to do, I have a host, but what do I need to do with this host to get it to run my Cont zone?

web servers DO NOT run programs, as they could be viruses. Most zone hosts don't even want your copy of subgame.exe as it could be a virus, and they just copy their good copy over your's.
look in your firewall/router manual. |

Ok...
I have changed the zone.dat file to my local IP address.
The zone will not connect to the server, and appears as red in the list.
Do I need to mess about with the ports to get it to work on only my computer?
I will sort out abuout it running on other's computers after.
I just want to test it, and make sure it is working.
Also, what IP is supposed to go in this field:
server.ini
[Misc]
ServerIP=
//Set to the server's IP #. This is used for *einfo's proxy detection |

No, you don't need to mess with port forwarding for a local server.
Post the server.ini. All of it.
And ServerIP should be the outside IP of the server |

So here's the deal. I can't get the ports forwarded because im using the colleges T3 connection, and like I would ever convince the administration to let me host a zone. Someone suggested something about using a pc anywhere program and using my computer as well as another computer to set up the zone. I have no idea how that would work, but a friend noted that we are on a closed network at the school. So basically its looking like im screwed. |

I have another problem now....the whole thing doesn't seem to be working anymore.
When I run the subbill and subgame2, it tries to make a link, but always fails.
I'm not sure why it's changed overnight.
Anyways, server.ini, I can't show you all of it, it has loadsa stuff you shouldn't be seeing in it....like passwords and stuff. |

just edit the passwords out before you post. it's common practice. |

I have a question on top of that. When you edit your local IP into the zone.dat, only computers are allowed to connect to the server, due to using the same IP. If you have the zone.dat changed to your local IP, computers outside the LAN can't connect. I probably already know that this is because of the router ignoring the players PC IP, right? Basically, I'm just trying to ask if I'm right by saying that you need to have the firewall forward the IP to your server, otherwise it ignores it. So I HAVE to let the router forward the connection attempt?
TIA

The zone.dat is for people INSIDE the LAN. It will only work for inside people (you are on the LAN).
The router/firewall forwarding is for people outside the LAN. It will only work for outside people.
These two things do not need to be done at the same time. They are independent.
There is a chance that the "gateway" forwarding will also allow LAN people to play, but most "gateway devices" dont like packets addressed to their outside coming from the inside, so I recomend the zone.dat fix, because it is independent of the model of firewall/router. |

UDP, and the IP is the IP of the computer the zone is running on. |
