my vocab sucks i mean i understand words but i cant figure out a definition for em it doesnt make sense but thats how it is. I hate dictionary's for some reason i can't figure out what meaning i should memorize for the word :-/ so i fail with learning with dictionaries. ok so i will donate to anyone who replies to this topic with definitions of words with the word included. dont take it out of the dictionary ill know and i wont donate. please tell me your vocabulary skills.U need to use the most commonnly used meaning for the word and no other meaning. explain ironic to me please using examples if you can and reason why the example is ironic. _________________ SOMEONE ATE MY PASSWORD |

My friend Alanis wrote a song about irony:
An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
Isn't it ironic ... don't you think
It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought ... it figures
Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
'Well isn't this nice...'
And isn't it ironic ... don't you think
Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face
It's a traffic jam when you're already late
It's a no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic... don't you think
A little too ironic... and yeah I really do think...

If you are honestly having problems, the best way to learn new words is in context. Read books. Lots of books. When you hit a word you don't know, try and figure out what it may mean based upon how it is used in the context of the story. If unsure, then go look in a dictionary and see how it applies in your case. |

I've found that reading science fiction helps a lot with vocabulary. I'm also rather partial to the genre (there's a word for you) in general. |

To keep our vocab up at work, we subscribe to Word of the Day mailing lists. It's fun because we'll try and use it to bash one another. Especially when the word was schadenfreude that one really got us going. _________________ Performance is often the art of cheating carefully. - James Gosling |

Read some old classical books. Try some books written in old english from the late 900s all the way to the 1400s; medieval books are a good pick.
If you have a computer with internet handy, try setting dictionary.com as your homepage. That way when you want to know what a word is, just open your browser and type in the word in the search box and hit enter. :] |

No, don't read classical books, I think L.C.'s just trying to be a jerk.
But I think MGB's advice to just read more in general is the best so far. _________________ This help is informational only. No representation is made or warranty given as to its content. Today's Word:
Craptacular (crap tack you ler) [adj]: 1. Used to describe your ordinary work day. 2. Often used by CypherJF to describe life at his workplace. 3. General consensus status of working a crappy job. |

You don't really need to try to memorize it. You just read, look up the words you don't know, and after a while you'll learn them naturally. |

download wordweb. It'll help, but read also. READ MOAR. And not Subspace, or Yahoo chat, some of those people are just about as illiterate as a group of monkeys. |
