Ok, my mom has a Windows XP box. She installed some programs, not sure what ones but I do know Spyroot. Now when she tries to log in it says, "The system cannot log you on because domain <Computer name> is unavailable. Where the domain is the computer name itself.

This box is not on any domain/network. It is all locally.

I have looked on the internet for this problem and the Windows website told me two things to do. I did them, and it didn't work. One was switch the rsaehn.dll or something. And the other is replace the registry. Neither worked.

I have read somewhere else that this one guy copied all .dll's from a good box into his and it worked. I would assume that would take a lot. I was wondering if any of you have had this problem and/or you could help me. I am installing a new harddrive in there anyways and reinstalling the OS onto it, but I still want to know what caused this and what it is so it doesn't happen again.

I have tried safemode/recovery console/replacing the .dll that Windows said to. Don't know what to do.

Suggestions/Comments/Questions are welcomed.

Could you try selecting dial up connection and logging in, then changing the settings? I don't know what all you tried and I've never tried to login with a dialup connection. I know the PCs at school have that option.

There was a little check box under the login information that you could click at school. If it didn't try to connect to the domain, I would think it would be able to login and then you could modify the settings for the domain.

It's not for a domain though. It is all locally, no domain involved.

WTF, BD. Stop posting if you don't know what you're talking about.

Cancer, can any user get in? Can you get in in safe mode? If so, make sure that the computer is not setup to login to a domain. This setting is under the System control panel on the Network Identification tab.

So, BD, if you leave the Windows stuff to us, will you be able to help me with the Linux problems?

Cancer+, does the error still appear immediately when you unplug the network cable?

Can't you run system restore by starting C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe ?

Crazy problems.

Have you tried "Last Known Good Configuration"? How about virus scanning the drive?

1. No network cable needed. Happens without it.
2. System restore? I don't believe I have tried that. Didn't know how to do it from dos/cmd prompt whatever.
3. Last known configuration, tried, didn't work.
4. Can't scan for virus' because I can't get into windows.

I will try the system restore but I doubt it will work.

Thanks for all the help so far, really appreciate it guys.

Just repair XP using the system CD, it should replace any system files that may have gotten futzed up.

I realize this. I figured you might be able to put the drive in a different PC or something.

In the end that is technically what I am going to be doing. I have to install another hd in this comp and copy everything over. I was just curious if I copied everything over, would it still do this?

Maybe if I copy everything over but all the .dll's in the system32 folder. That is what one guy did and he said his turned out fine.
