4:Yavaris> google finds: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318729
4:Chambahs> take the harddrive, and set it up as a slave to another HD, then you can boot up on the master HD, and go through the files on the slave drive, find out where it is, and replace it
4:Chambahs> but thats if you have 2 PCs
4:Emblazon> ive already restored bios to default, didnt change anything. and the computer only has 1 ram stick so i cant remove any
4:Yavaris> ew
4:Yavaris> your pc sucks
4:Emblazon> we think this may have been caused by a virus from a torrent download finishing overnight. suddenly the computer shut down and this morning, it started doing this. |

Get Knoppix or Ubuntu or something on a CD and see if that will boot. The fact that it can't boot from the Windows CD is rather worrying. _________________ This help is informational only. I've used Knoppix Live CD many of times to offload vital files, then nuked my windows install. Kept getting a cannot find C:\windows\system32\ error message and Windows XP wouldn't let me repair it, so I end up having to reinstall it, thinking I had a bad harddrive. _________________ Performance is often the art of cheating carefully. - James Gosling |

I'll be gone all weekend, but I'm going to make a windows 98 boot disk cd-rom (since the problem laptop doesnt have a floppy drive but my pc does) and try that next week. I'll post if my results when I can. I found a site that explains how to make the cd-rom pretty easily with the right software. http://www.geocities.com/salamand0s/ultra.html |

So instead of making a useful boot CD you decide to make a useless one. OK, ignore us. |

Right software? I know on Ubuntu I just open the cd drive, drag and drop, and click write to disc and it's done. Windows XP is like that too. Unless you're trying to make a windows cd. You have to do everything so so. Good luck. |

Drag and drop yourself a bootable cd, BD. Please, try to have some idea what you're talking about before you convey your ignorance to the world. _________________ Hyperspace Owner

Worked for my Ubuntu, DSL, and SMoothwall cds. They booted fine.
Edit: I do remember having to do all kind of things in order to make a bootable cd on windows. Bleh I was assuming it was an iso. |
