Well I have a INTEL Pentium 4 processor and am trying to figure out my motherboard socket to buy a new heatsink. My current one is the default one the intel cpu comes with and it "snaps on" to the mother board (like legos kinda like a claw and snaps in to the frame attached to MB).

My issue is I dont know what socket this is and dont know what my motherboard is except its a Abit motherboard.

I opened up to find out to see if it had the model # anywhere on the MB but no, and this is the string I found when starting up my computer under the line that says "Press esc to enter bios..."

Um, do you know where the processor goes on your motherboard? That is the actual socket, and it should say on there something like Socket 7(hopefully newer than that). That's what your socket is. This is the same socket as your processor, too, so if you know what socket your processor uses.... I'd like to help more, but I'm not sure how much you know. I'm guessing you're new to the hardware side of computers, though. Given a picture of the motherboard, if you can take one, I might be able to identify the socket just from that. And of course, you can always search Newegg for Abit motherboards that support Intel Pentium 4 processors and see if you can't spot your motherboard.

It points out the processor socket and what type it is. Like I said, it probably tells on the socket itself on your motherboard, but you may have to take the processor off. Anyway, I'd be really surprised if the model number wasn't somewhere on your board, it just may be really small. Anyway, I think I've covered pretty much everything you'd need here. Hope this helps, and if it doesn't, see if you can get us more info.

If it's a Dell, HP or another major manufacturer, you can look up the specs for your computer's model number on their website.

If that's not an option, my best guess is that you have a 661fx motherboard. Unfortunately, that still leaves a few different models. You can try comparing the different model's pictures on the abit website to what you have inside. If you find one that matches, you can figure out what socket you have.
