Perhaps this is a good time to start locking really old threads in non-help forums?

That or make it automatically create a new thread with a link to the old one.

That's not the problem. It's bumping exceptionally old topics that's the problem.

Ignore their threads, problem solved. Why should MGB have to do anything? There's an ignore option, as you've pointed out, so use it. Trash Talk is exactly that. If you don't like pointless threads or posts, don't read the forum. Just look at the forum, scan the thread titles, and if nothing catches your fancy, then move on.
