If you buy the hardware seperately from dealers online or on Ebay, you can typically build a computer for cheaper than it is to have one already built.

I'm pretty sure with todays market it's cheaper to buy a new computer than to build it. With the time, energy, warranty, etc. that is involved. Though, if you know what you're doing, know where to buy the parts (and know what is compatable with what), obtaining a legal OS license (since I doubt you'll be working w/ say a flavor of Linux) *cough* winndows, etc.

I love my HP laptop too, but for desktops I'd say always either build it yourself or pay someone to build it. That's what my friend's business is. If you want the link to his site, I can dig it up.

I've had a computer since I was 13 (YeAh 386 win 3.1!) and have never, ever, used anyone's tech support. Anything you'll ever need to know about your computer, you can find online. Most problems are simple fix-it-urself issues, which usually consist of a format.

I'll save you money on tech support right now by telling you exactly what they'd tell you. If you have any problems, either restart the machine, or restore to factory defaults. There ya go, $200 saved right there.

Making a computer is better then buying one for many reasons... for example I built my computer about 3 years ago

Code: Show/Hide
Specs when built

Athlon 1700+ XP cpu
256 megs ddr memory
32 meg Geforce 2mx pci
10 Gig hard drive.

After 3 years I now run

Code: Show/Hide

same 1700+ xp
1280 megs ddr
128meg ddr Geforce 5200 FX 4x AGP
60 Gig ata133 7200rpm hd

Just with my main board I can hold up to a AMD Barton 3200xp, 3 Gigs ddr memory pc1600, 2100, 2700 and DDR400, and 8x agp card.

With most store bought computers... dell and hp.... you'll only be able to upgrade the cd or dvd drives, hard disk, ram, and maybe even the graphics card.
Build your own and you will always be able to upgrade any part of it.

Oh yeah and in reply to ordering parts from ebay and making it cheaper, I started with a barebone kit I found off of www.pricewatch.com It cost me around 400 bucks to build it... I probly have around 800 in the tower alone now.

I reckon it's easier buying a new computer. Dell does VERY cheap ones indeed. And not so bad specs either.

I'm not very happy with my computer at the moment, but don't have the money (my own money that is) to get a new computer.

Lucky my sister is getting a new dell computer, so I can have her old bigger tower computer. Pentium 2 (I am going to a computer shop to get my p3 changed over to my sisters computer if the motherboard is compatible) with extended memory. 40 gigs harddrive (no matter, just add my current 80 gigs hdd) and 2x cd players (one with DVD player, the other with DVD and re-writable capabilities) and surround sound speakers. And most importantly, NEW FANS AND NEW POWER LEADS. (one of my internal fans has broken and the power leads are too loose on mine).

Cheaper to get upgraded.

My friend built a really nice top of the line desktop for like $1500 bucks, there was a site he used that basically takes you step by step through everything, even suggesting some part retailers. I wouldn't recommend building your own laptop though.

Do you get the same quality cooling/silence/parts/performance for the same price it would take you to build it as it would to buy it? That's usually the question I ask.

If you buy a Dell w/ onboard sound/video are you going to want to change it later on?

Is the experience of learning how to build a computer better than learning how to upgrade one?

Any other costs/benefits?

I'd say you can build an excellent computer for around $800-$1000 depending on what components you want to buy.

mobo + cpu + memory = ~$400-$500?
case = ~$50-100
video card = ~$100-300
software = ~$100-$400 depending on what you want.

Wow, i just saw winxp pro or 2000 going for around $40-$50.. i wonder..

Dell may look nice now, until you get to ordering one.

I'm not sure how bad Dell is in the USA, but I once ordered a laptop at Dell here.
It looks pretty cheap, but as soon you start selecting a few parts which actually satisfy your needs, you'd be on the double of the costs.
And then still your stuff's a little outdated already.

Two months later they seemed to have finally processed my order and I got an e-mail to confirm my order.
I didn't reply, the laptop's specs would be like a year behind when I eventually got it. icon_sad.gif

Also, all the people who had issues with their Dells here had troubles with their helpdesks, reparations also took way too long (7 weeks for a new motherboard?!).

I'd rather buy my computers/parts from a fast and costumer-friendly company.

Heh, i88gerbils, don't worry, I'm sure these people here know what warez are. icon_sad.gif

Thats how all premanufactured pc companys are Solo... they say hey we have this great comp for 600 bucks... but once you upgrade the ram and a few other things to what you want your looking at 1200 bucks... its a joke.... I looked into one and they wanted 1d0 bucks for 512megs for ram upgrade.. I can get 512ddr for around 50

Is there a Dell company even based in The Netherlands? I mean, you can't expect to deliever your laptop (including the specs that you need to satisfy your needs) within 2 - 3 days. It needs time to prepare for building, right?

But I do agree that 1 month, and 7 weeks is way too long.

Hmm..Is anyone else thinking what im thinking? tongue.gif

Anyways, if you're not expirenced in building your own computer, I do not suggest you do..although you may think you know how, if you have never done it before, DO NOT DO IT. Your best bet would probably be to buy it from a company such as Dell. However, it all really depends on what you are looking for in the computer. Dell has a computer out now with 2.4ghz celeron, 256mb ddr sdram for only 299$, but if you're wanting a 3.8ghz 2gb ddr2 ram computer with a 1gb graphics card..your best bet would be to build it yourself. Getting it through dell, you'd easilly hit 2k-4k. Building it yourself, 1-2k.

If you're just looking for something that can 'get you around' you can always get a Sempron for 100$ (like 1.4ghz) at places like Best Buy
