I recently recieved a computer and I decided to put Gentoo on it. The installation was tedious. The computer is a Gateway ProfileIII CX (documentation (its a Pentium 3 1ghz): http://support.gateway.com/support/manlib/Profile/Profile3/8508183/8508183.htm ).
The problems I am having are all video related. First problem is that the built-in lcd display is 1024x768 and gentoo refuses to use anything but 640x480. Its a small screen in the middle of my larger screen, making it impossible to read anything and edit files that have long strings in them. I tried a few things but haven't found anything that works, the live-cd complains about being passed a "undefined mode number" if that helps at all.
Second problem is that I am attempting to setup X-server and it is being a bitch. I've been following the directions found here, http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml , with no luck. root>X -config /root/xorg.conf.new responds with the errors
(EE) GARTInit: Unable to open /dev/agpgart (No such file or directory)
(EE) I810(0): AGP GART support is not available. ...
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

Fatal server error: no screens found

I figure I must have chosen the hardest distro to setup, you really need a ridiculous amount of linux knowledge. Any help with the setup of KDE would be helpful too, I've tried emerge but it says it's masked or some BS. Also what is a good C/C++ IDE to use with linux?

Maybe you are missing agpgart in the kernel? You can also try vga=773 on the kernel parameters. I think thats 128x48 chars 8bpp, can't be sure though (it it's only for the alt+f# consoles, not x).

If you have a profile in xorg.conf for 640x480, maybe take it out so the next one (800x600) gets used?

My low resolution problem with KDE was that I needed to put the proper moniter settings in my xorg.conf... I got them right off the moniter's website...

I'm thinking about trying out Gnome as there's some things about KDE I dislike (the default file selector, for example).

I just think 50% selected an invalid monitor number in the xorg.conf. icon_confused.gif

I think it's the same for your video mode problems.

Post your xorg.conf file, I had some of the same problems.
If I can't see what's wrong I'll run to #gentoo on Efnet as I need help from them myself a lot. sa_tongue.gif

I disagree, the handbook tells you what to do and really guides you through the installation.
Some people are working on a GUI'd installer, now you need to use a LiveCD or some other environment to install it from.

I was a complete newbie to Linux, I'm not saying I got much further though, the only difference now is that the commandline doesn't scare me anymore and I know where to look when I get some problems.
Anyway, I could set Gentoo up by just following the handbook, by doing that I got to know the OS, after fixing problems with a helping hand from the people in #gentoo on efnet I'm making it my own now. icon_smile.gif
