Use bind or djbdns.
I personally use Bind because there's a lot of documentation for it. They do say that djbdns is better though. _________________ Hyperspace Owner

So wait, you want a local DNS server, so whenever you lookup an address (ie: forums.minegoboom.com), it checks your local DNS server for the IP address? If so, bind is what I use on my firewall as a local DNS cache for quicker access
Or you want a name/domain server, so whenever someone looks up mysite.com, it will check with the name/domain server to find the IP address? If so, I can offer that with my site, and there are many other free ones that can too.
Or you want to register a domain name, such as minegoboom.com? If its a top-level domain, it will cost money, or else the site you are registering it will have some other method, such as they own the domain and not you, or you have to sign up for something. Buying a domain name isn't expensive, I pay less than $10 a year for mine.
Or you want a free thing, such as DynDNS which will let you have something like weavil.homeserver.net always point to your computer's IP address? |

I have xp Pro so no dns server comes with it, only 2000 and 2003 have it. i'm not sure what i need... im going to host my own .com site and i dont know if my ip has ever changed so i need a dns host to keep it setup so it dont go offline if the ip changes. I dont want to pay for a dns host since im already going to be paying for the .com address. I assume i can run a dns server from this computer and it do what i need it too.
I'm running apache 2 with php, mysql, python and all of the other goodies, including a ftp server and mail server. |

Thats what I want to do, you can check the link out to see what you think of the site i'm going threw to get the domain name. http://domains.aplus.net/
I also have another question. I've never messed with domain names or anything before other then using no-ip.com's free service. Does it cost extra to set it up so that like for mgb's site forum.mgb points to the forum and wiki.mgb points to another section or what do i need to know?

Ahem? How about C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts?
Not sure if that's relevant, though.
Bind owns.
Heh, when I put a site up for SS, can I get a DNS redirection as a subdomain at minegoboom.com?
I got a few on t3g.org already, but your domain is superior. |

wEaViL, is it correct that you are going to host a webpage on your own computer? If that is the case then you should check if you haven't got a dynamic ip. If you do then you will have major problems with a domain which only redirects to a static ip. |

Yes im hosting from my computer, as far as i can tell my ip has never changed, whenever i get a chance i have a old ss server on a backup disk, i can check it to see if the ips are the same still. |
