ok alot of people find ship rotation hard..because..they havent got a 3d prog, and they want a 3d ship with lighting!..muwahahaha...its possible.
coz ive done it..
all you need is...
Photoshop!
download the trial and do it..if u havent already got photoshop...
or go and but it, its the worth the money!
but if u just want ship rotation..and nothing more..just get the trial.
anyway..more on HOW TO DO IT.
basically..get ur 2d ship graphic (darken it a bit)
and go into photoshop.
1)make a new layer and color it black.
2)make a layer on top of that call it "ship" make everything around the ship transparent (use paint bucket, set mode to clear)
3) make another layer on top of that call it "light1"
4) render lighting effects on "light1" not too bright have it cover most of all the ship, but mostly brighter near the top left corner
5) set the layer mode for "light1" to color dodge..youl see a small effect instantly on the ship image.
6) make another layer..call it "light2"
7) render more lighting effects on it, but make it slightly brighter and only cover the top left corner
set mode of "light2" to color dodge
9) tweak it for a bit until it looks perfect(filter>offset is useful)
10) goto the ship layer and edit>tranmsform
rotate by 9 degrees..flatten all copy and paste into your shipset template(if u got one.)
then undo the flatten (ctrl+alt+z)
the rotate an extra 9 degrees..copy and paste into template..bla bla..keep repeating.
k so the whole rotating part is long whinded..but im a patient person, hope you are too!
ill attach a psd and a shipset template soon

Can you make this into a filter/plugin? (How do you make those anyway?) That way you import your ship, it lights it and rotates it for you no matter what the original dimensions were.

smong, that is a great idea...what about..if someone made yet another ss ship rotation tool, but with the power of photoshop...i mean..seriously..i used one of them once to rotate a ship..it was horrendus..u shoulda seen the jaggeys.
they shud make a progs, with the light layers..and the ship u import goes underneath..and rotates..then itd be coolio
ill try and find out more information on plugins for ya smong
