It's someone deciding what is offensive to others. Fuck that.

Free speech only applies when it's the government trying to shut you up, not a private entity.

No, everyone can speak their minds anywhere they want to. However there are some people who will not assume responsibility. This is also true for sysops as much as it is for players.

Yes, a cop might, but there is no legal precedent for it unless you're already going to be arrested anyway.

just calling the cop a pig is enough to get you arrested

There is a difference between calling a cop a "pig" and telling the cop that you find him a "pig".

The difference is that in the second one you express your opinion, the first one doesn't do that.

In HZ we only filter out the racism. If someone is avoiding the filter then they get silenced. That way if people want to joke around with their friends and call eachother racist names, that's fine, there's no malicious intent. But if someone wants to go out of their way to call a player who has the racism filter turned on a racist name through use of special characters, that's where we draw the line.

Personally I don't see what your issue is with this, Ekted, I know you're big on freedom speech and all that, but before I implemented this rule there used to be a strict non-racism policy in HZ, and more than a couple bans for it each day. This is a perfect compromise for the people who are genuinely offended (yeah, I find it hard to believe that someone would get offended over text, but there's really no way of telling).

Free speech is what you are allowed to do. Open source is what others expect of you. Two different directions. And I am not against open source. I just don't think it is a panacea.

Of course you won't be able to filter everything, but for your example you could write code to replace characters, and then run a check to prevent people from trying to bypass.

But... whatever, I don't even know why I'm even visiting these forums here.

I have no problem with obscene.txt, as intended by VIE.
If a player find something as offensive and place it there, their problem.
Client side = client's business.

However, I find the notion of enforcing server-issued obscene.txt and as well as enforcing its enablement via server-side issued order deplorable.

As Ekted said, it's someone making decisions for you.

A panacea much like placebo share a common element with "utopia".
In pure greek, utopia means no-place.
Utopia is an utopia, simply because it does not exist.
Had it existed, a man would've found a way to reach it and then consequently defile it, which then it would no longer be an utopia.
Placebo and Panacea exist, in mind and theory, simply because they do not exist.

Open source is an alternative, maybe a placebo to some, it can't be a panacea, were it to, then it would cease to exist (at least as a panacea) that very instant.

we're moving towards a utopia pretty quickly

look at how people viewed heaven thousands of years ago... it's how we're living today. We're living better than kings did 300 years ago.

Consider the fact that as we get more technologically advanced, our lives get harder.

Long ago people didn't even go through elementary school. That became common and them only some went to highschool. Then that became common and it was special to go to college. Now people say that if you want to make good money you need a grad degree or higher.

We think our lives are getting better, but truthfully they aren't. For every advancement we have to get another and another. I'd rather just live on a farm and work 9 months out of the year. That would be so simple... so easy.
