What is better?
To have many small objects or one big one?

A ton of really small images or a few really big images are both bad. You need to find something comfortable in the middle. If you truly have a heavy "tiled" map, I would suggest breaking it up into 128x128, 256x256, or 512x512 as fits your layout. You could go a little smaller, but I wouldn't go any bigger.

According to my calculations, ideal size is 1/4 the area of the screen. So on 1024x768 that means 512x384.
Of course no one will tile a rectangle, so go with 512^2, 384^2 or whatever works best.
