I think it might be my lan port. How do I test this?

All other computers in my house work, including my Linux computer(that I'm currently on). My Linux computer is connected through the same hub as my other computer. I've tried switching the cords between the two computers around, and using the cord straight out of the wall, so I know it's not a hardware issue, unless it's the lan port. My lan port is onboard, and I can't put in another lan card to test... thanks to absolutely horrible board design, there is a power connector at the bottom of the board(wtf?) that blocks the PCI port. I can fit something in the port if I disconnect the power supply from there... but then my computer won't turn on. I have another PCI port, but my video card is in there. And with no onboard video, I can't see what I'm doing to test the lan port.

But it's likely a software issue. For the first time in 2 years or more, I got spyware the other day. Random popups, even when all my browsers were turned off. I looked into getting rid of the spyware myself, but I tried the most obvious things, like using the spyware's own uninstall method(lol), shutting off the process and removing the registry entry from CurrentVersion\Run, and physically deleting the files. None of this worked, so I figured I'd just try ad-aware. It came up with a lot of results, so I deleted everything involved. The popups stopped, but so did my internet. I couldn't get internet to work even after checking device and network settings, so I figured I'd just try System Restore. Well, System Restore never worked. After I used it in safemode and it rebooted, it would come up with an error message as soon as Windows came up again, saying it was incomplete. In the end, I even tried putting in my XP CD and clicking "Repair my XP Install". Booted back up, and there's still no internet. This is the point when I decided it might actually be the lan port, even though I think that's probably not the case.

I don't want to reformat right now, so I figure I'll at least test my lan port. One more thing - many times, after rebooting, I'll go to Device Manager, and the network card will be disabled. I'll re-enable it... but why does it ever get disabled in the first place? Anyway, if any of you have had similar problems, I'd love to hear your results.

It probably won't help but you could check to see if the onboard lan is enabled in the bios.

Ah, it is, Smong. I hate going into my BIOS, though. It randomly forgets that I have harddrives sometimes, and it takes years and several reboots(like 30) before it finally remembers.

Anyway, I was tryng to use this Linux computer for a while, but I got this error message while usng yum(package manager for Fedora):

Error Downloading Packages:
avahi-glib - 0.6.16-4.fc6.i386: Insufficient space in download directory //var/cache/yum/updates/packages to download

Er... I know I have free space. Any idea wtf is up?

Sometimes on Ubuntu you have to clear the cache. Try backing up and deleting the files in that directory.
