I would like to know everything about how a server (the physical computer hardware) works and how to set one up. I have a dell blade server and i want to make ranked servers and host websites for free.

ORLY.

If you have to ask this on a forum, don't bother trying.
I don't believe you have a dell blade server, because if you did you could figure this all out by yourself.

A server's just a computer dedicated to "serving" other systems. The hardware's mostly the same, except the hardware of a 'server' is designed to be fast (I/O), usually "fail-safe" and ready for a good air-flow to keep the temperature low.

'Server' computers usually lack a GUI and external hardware.

Good luck with that.

You're probably confusing a blade server with a rack server. Newbs seem to do this.

There isn't necessarily a hardware difference between a server and a normal computer. The term "server" is loosely applied to machines, it can be defined as a computer built for running servers, or any computer that runs servers. A "server" is really just a program that's meant to give some basic amount of central control to multiple programs running on other computers. That definition doesn't apply even to all servers, but that's not a bad way of thinking about them. Anyway, if you want to host stuff for free, I suggest you first check your cash supply and make sure you're willing to dish out... well, I don't know the actual cost, but I'd assume at least 50$ a month? I know of some pseudo-server machines you can rent for 50$ a month(VPSes), but even providing your own machine I don't think you could find anything for less than that. Most professional servers would cost from bare minimum 100$ a month, up to 250$ a month. Just a little information. You could get better responses by telling us what you know about servers, and what exactly you need to learn?

Sucky VPS, you can get for $10-15. Dedicated Server, low stats and bandwidth, $30.

Where could you get a dedicated server for 30$ a month? A full, dedicated server with Linux?

Haha, hey "Guest", want to see my C230 AMG? tongue.gif

Some of us actually read the manual instructions when they buy a server. Actually, did you buy just one? sa_tongue.gif

Who said anything about games? I didn't until after you did.

If you can afford $3000 dollers on a server, that you don't know how to use,
you can afford to pay for professional advice , instead of trying to get it free of teh interweb.

Well I was actually hoping you had just a normal rack server instead of a blade server, because now it appears you wasted a bunch of money on power you don't need. Unless it's going to be a giant server for a server-intensive game (like SS is not), you won't need any more power than a standard 1U rack server.

This whole situation is just ridiculous. I'm not even sure what advice to give you at this point.

Look up each of the software you want to run. Things like Apache is free, so you don't have to pay anything for it. Running a game server like Unreal costs money to buy Unreal, but they do not charge anything after that.

In case you have not caught on, these forums are specific for running a game server for a game called Continuum. And a blade "Server" is nothing special that makes it a server. Servers are just a name for a computer not being used as a desktop, but are still just a computer. There is nothing stopping you from using a blade machine as your normal desktop machine.

Yeah, MGB is right, you have to look up each individual server you want to run. If you want to run a Continuum server, you can continue to ask questions about subgame or AS3 and we can point you to what you need. If you'd like to run a webserver, go to http://httpd.apache.org , that would be a good place to start. if you'd like to run a Teamspeak server, you'll have to go here for the files, which like apache, are also free: http://www.goteamspeak.com/ .

If you ever want to run servers, something generic like a "voice" server, you first have to find out what servers are available. In the case of voice you'd be looking at Ventrilo[sic], or TeamSpeak. Skype is another option for online audio conversations, but it doesn't need a server. Your second step is to research the servers, and find one you think fits you best. Third, go to the server's website, and it will tell you if it's free or not, where to get it, and how to install and run it. If you need any help past that, most servers probably have their own forums available, or some form of help you can use. If you get to where you're actually trying to install servers, if you ask here enough times you'll probably get some useful advice.

You bought a blade server? You do realize you need both the blade server(s) and the enclosure, unless you bought an enclosure with 1 blade.. Typically the enclosure provides base services like power that the blades cannot run without.

Sorry just a little confused on your hardware specs, if you provided more details I'm sure you would get better assistance.

As for software and services, if you are not familiar with server operating systems and the services included with most, I would assume you aren't familiar with the OS installation itself. On that note I would worry more about studying various operating systems (for you windows), and look into server security before offering free services.

Sounds like you really dont know what your doing. Do a google search for Apache2Triad, its a server bundle with alot of preconfigured things for webhosting like Php, MySQL, Webstats, and others. Theres also a free program out thats just like CPanel but I can't remember the name of it right now. Its good for alowing friends to setup there own website on your server. Since your running it from your house, trailer, work, or whatever you'll need a domain name... http://www.Noip.com has a decent service and fair prices. They have a nice program you can run that will keep them updated on your ip if you run it from a lowend connection like dsl or cable where the ip changes randomly.
