So you know, the recent spam that has been hitting here is not automated spammers. These are actual people paid to go around, and spam boards. They are being proxied behind zombied machines, and excluding one incident in which a spammer posted two messages in one day, not a single other spam came from the same 20 bit subnet as another. Thus, I cannot just block IP ranges, as these are actual home addresses, a good majority of them in the USA or other European countries in which people who frequent this site visit from. Also, a CAPTCHA won't work either, as these are humans posting the messages. I stopped a bunch because they were using filterable User Agent strings, but more and more, most of them are actually using a correctly formatted IE string, with correct referrals, goes through the site correctly in a normal time it would take someone to load the page, go to a forum, click New Thread, and paste in junk. Hell, they even follow the redirect to their post after the message went through.
As to disabling guest posting? I'd rather them post as Guests than to load up the forum with tons of useless spammers creating accounts, which they will do. Like I said, these are humans going around posting the spam now.
The best thing to do is not even post a reply. I frequent these forums at least once a day, and I do attempt to look at every single post done (0 people ignored, only 3 threads ignored), even if I don't get the chance to respond to every message. |

If you're looking for a hack idea, here's one.
Make it so when a guest (and only a guest) posts a reply (or a topic), there's a button "mark for deletion", and have it so after 5ish people mark it, it gets deleted. _________________ Hyperspace Owner

Getting paid to spam?...what a gig, where do I sign up for this job?
Finally, something I can do from my PC seat all day long between gaming sessions...
Seriously now, though, you know what to do Murphy.

Please, let us decide if the post actually needs deleting.
Some retard spams, we delete it, but when we (I) delete it, it only shows up deleted on our computer, not anyone elses. It's like ignoring topics, but instead, ignoring posts. _________________ Haha SpecShip |

We don't need a system to ignore stupid people. We've already got that.
It's debatable if we even need a system to delete spam, but I figured I'd mention the possibility. |

Seriously people, it isn't that hard to ignore certain posters without features of the board. I don't block any specific user's post at all, because I need to have the ability to filter out 'bad things', such as people spamming porn sites, idiots posting useless things in help threads, etc. But trust me, there are certain users in which once I see their post, I skim it and don't bother caring what is in there.
We don't need to make it harder for people to get help. That is the point of these forums: to help people. Take a look at the forum you should be reading, and see how many of those topic starters are posting as a guest. Notice their questions are simple (sure, Google/search could have answer it), thus the method for getting their answers should be simple. This month, I've only had 7 pure spam posts, most of which I caught before people replied to it (why do you feel the need to? "oh boy, this person is talking about porn in a response to someone's router not working, better get my little joke in now while the timing is good!").
Sure, some of you people are complete asses, who spend all their waking time thinking of ways to piss off someone, while more than a select few even dream about it. But a good chunk of you people are real humans, who assist people when they ask a question, who suggest possible solutions when you don't know the real answers, and who give people positive critiques to help them develop their zones. And that is why I still run these forums, why I still frequent here, even though I rarely enter the game other than a quick 30 minutes to kill playing in Chaos Zone.
In fact, I have 30 minutes to kill right now. Time to go green and try and hunt turrets, which I hope are currently flying around in there. It is fun to be the underdog and not have a huge ego to defend. Try it sometimes. |

I prefer solo's method to your method of slamming everyone else while not-so-subtlely demanding everyone with an IQ below 185 be banned. |

Why recode the forum to allow you to vote against a topic if its spam? Wanna know what will happen? A group of asswipes will form on here and start going threw and voting to delete legit topics because they A. want to be jerks or B. dont like the poster. Solo has the best idea so far... bring in some dedicated users (members that contribute and have been members for a while) to skim threw and remove the spam. Some of us check in atleast twice a day if not more... would need perhaps 2 or 3 new mods to pull it off. Whatever MGB decides to do is whats going to happen, I could careless about the spam because it doesn't bother me much. Hell my hotmail inbox has more spam then this forum... Guess the only plus is that it has half the jerks and some of it is useful dribble. |

Or, murphy could get off his ass, recode those fancy filters he love to tinker and let loose rampaging, unmonitored, undiagnosed, of his and have them target the key words (porno, sex, casino, gambling) these spammers are using, match them in certain random sentences (most of these spammers repeat same context, same text even, so you could create a database to check keywords against) and have them automaticaly banned or something, or notify the mods of the post so they can go check its validity?
That's what I was talking about.
Also, right my ass, you are incompetent backstabbing filth murphy.
Moreso, what's wrong with 185 IQ'd people-only forum?
Guests are allowed to seek help no matter what's their IQ, spyed/quan/etc. aren't allowed to show face around.
(and we might even get rid of cerium's "DIE DIE DIE GO HANG YOURSELF" retardecy, unless he can find it in him to mature a bit, doubtfuly) |

Which would be roughly whenever I have the time, I'd go look at the post that is 'tagged' and verify it. Which is what I do with almost every post anyways whenever I had 5 minutes or so to kill between two other tasks, I browse these forums.
The filters I apply should only target spammers. Word filters can target normal users, and the recent spam posted here is really not that hard to fix. |

If all is so well and good anyway, then what in the nine hells compelled you to start this thread and start whining?
I vote to junk you, and delete this thread, or vice versa.
If you aren't looking for feedback, use the announcement forum and lock the post.

Just because you don't care about spam here, it doesn't mean other people don't care. Not everyone's opinion is the same as yours you know. |
