I've had problems with several of the java based chat clients over jre1.5 on linux. Are there any known working and/or shell type chat clients?

ccc which comes with asss uses python, and if you don't want to install python there's an old clone of ccc in c here http://toktok.sscentral.com/files/cccc-0.9.tar.gz

Try http://www.sscx.net/hyperspace/chatnut.jar

Either run it from http://www.sscx.net/hyperspace/chat.html or download the jar and run it as an application. I prefer the application because it saves settings.
