Hey im running a server on my computer and lost the password for one of my players. I tried running the user.dat that cotains all the info on the users who logged onto my server but the passwords are *coded. All i can see is the amount of characters in the password. I Also tried running it with the html/plain text converting program but the password just isn't part of its interfaces. Since i am the owner of the server tehres gotta be a way i can see it icon_confused.gif . I dont want to just delete the user and remake one. I must get the password. And no icon_exclaim.gif ! it doesnt work with notepad.exe!!!! new_evil.gif

Its encrypted, though not very well done. Anyways, the best you should do is just set it to a new password.

How? Look in your subbill.ini file for the sysop password. Then, in your zone, type ?login password to log in as a billing operator. Then you can just use ?changepassword to reset his password to something new. If his name was Bob Man, to change his password to jim, you'd type ?changepassword Bob Man:jim

MAV! Don't post that link, idiot. We don't want every newb on the planet going around getting people's passwords.

The stupidity.

Don't decrpyt people's passwords. There's no good reason why you'd need to do so. It's as simple as that.

Mav had posted a link to a way to recover the password; however, I agree with Cyan that we don't need this information to become more readily available to those who might abuse the knowledge; so he (MM) removed it (the link).

The best advice given is that posted by Mine GO BOOM.

It wasn't. This topic was posted twice, so I closed one down for a bit, which is where your post is sitting.

It is possible to decipher the password, though in roughly 50% of the cases, you'd get a random string instead of the real password, but that random string will still log you into Subspace as his name (it is called a collision, two things both hash to the same value). But to do so, you'd need to actually work your way with a hex editor to find the specific bytes in the user.dat, and then create a little program to decipher the data using given math functions. This requires a bit of skill to do so, and since you already mentioned that changing his password isn't acceptable, we fear the worst in that you or someone else will use this and attempt to steal passwords from users.

This has happened before, which is why Continuum warns people when they enter a zone not connected to the SSC billing server about the risk of having your password stolen. I'm sorry, but if resetting his password isn't a valid option, that is where we'll end the assistance at.
