I just emailed ICANN and pitched for ".dev" domains.
Seeing as how almost all good .com and .net are taken, and many of us are engaged in development.
It'll be far more suitable for dev teams to have .dev instead of .com (unless they're selling out ).
Especially sites like sourceforge which should really be a .dev and not .com, since .com means commerical and free open source is far from being that.
I think it's about time .com stop being the rabbid equivalent of a filename extension (might as well call them .exe at that) and start being used for what it is to be used - big opressionist capitalist pigs (OCP) companies chasing money (like microsoft and sony).
The rest of us, if we're true to the code, should be .dev we seek to create, expand and evolve, not to make a yacht and accounts in swiss banks. |

Hmm.. I like the idea.
I'm still new to this domain deal, but how would you create a new domain? _________________ SSE Network Administrator |

sourceforge.com does sell a commercial enterprise version of the software that is running on sourceforge.net. |

Thank you for your inquiry. However, there is no standard process for the addition of new TLDs. ICANN is working on developing a long-term strategy in this area. Any further progress on this would be announced on our website at www.icann.org.
Kind regards,
ICANN

Subject: A suggestion for a new domain extension.
Hello.
Me and my associates are amateur indie. game developers.
We are interested in registering a domain for our group, however, the two top tier (.com, .net) which would be considered acceptable are already taken for our ideal domain name.
We were wondering if it would be possible to register, and possibly create a new genre of, a new domain extension - ".dev" (develop/ment).
Given that there are many developers all over the WWW, it might be far more suitable for such goal-oriented sites to use as well, instead of the currently-conventioned top tier extensions (and possibly free those for more suitable and/or its originally intended use - commercial, network, organization).
It would probably also help elevate some of the pressure that ensues from rivalries over the top tier domains (or big companies pushing down individuals using trademark laws to vacate their domains inorder to unethically take them over).
Thank you in advance, anxiously waiting for your reply.
Sincerely,
- Ori Klein
