1. They allow you to put multiple computers onto a network. (switch)

2. They allow you to make those multiple computers look like a single computer. (network address translation, or NAT)

3. They allow you to control the flow of packets by direction and port. (firewall)

They are only useful if you have broadband, they act as a guard between your computer(s) and the internet.
