Today, someone entered my zone offering us his biller.
I said it sounds pretty good, but my squad is unclear on what a biller exactly is.
Can someone give me a thorough explanation on what exactly a biller is?
I want to know the pros and cons of one. _________________ Please visit my squad's zone! |

| The biller is the program that runs and keeps track of users, squads, score's and such.... if your running the server from your own comp or server then you can use a different biller, if its hosted on a server like NTC SSI or any of the other big ones then you dont need to worry about it cuase they run there own biller.... |

Billing servers are just a central location where player's names, passwords, and scores are saved. It allows zones to communicate with other zones on the same billing.
Advantages of using someone else's is that there are more zones connected, and you can take advantage if someone wanted to play in one of those zones, and talk with someone in another zone on the same billing. Another good advantage is that your server wouldn't have the strain of a billing server running on it (if you run one).
Disadvantages are, since you are connecting to another person's billing server, there is a chance they would sniff/decrypt your passwords. Which is a reason why Continuum warns you when you enter a non-SSC zone. Users are recommended to have a different password for every non-SSC zone, and not be one that you use for other accounts, because it isn't too hard to steal user's passwords if they wanted to. |

billers keep track of player info
they can make it easier to organize stats and keep people in-line (like banning systems)
if you're planning on running your zone all the time, a biller is something you'd probably appreciate
the best most available biller I know of atm is SSI's |

That text on the SSI Billing application is deceptive, I should get strike to rephrase it. Its open to pretty much anyone with a decent connection and who will keep the zone online as often as possible.
you can contact me at any time from pretty much anywhere and Ill get back to you as soon as I can. _________________ There are no stupid question, but there are many inquisitive idiots.

So the Billing-Server only manages user accounts, etc.? Can you run a "subgame2"-server without connecting to a billing server? I don't think so.
Why is it called a "billing" server? A "billing" is a sheet of paper which tells me how much I have to pay for something but for Subspace/Continuum I don't have to pay anything. *confusing* |

If you simply run the subgame it'll run in standalone mode. It is possible, however none of your scores will be saved, you can't really ban (as soon as the zone is restarted the bans will be gone), and no player usernames will be saved (players can login as you if they wanted).
As for the name? People have called it a billing server for as long as I can remember. No clue as to why. It's just a billing server. |
