I suppose this was written into the game... so there's no way to change how much it protects your ship? It would be nice if I could set it so that the player was invincible(sp) for the duration of the shields.

Shields absorb the damage of how many % is left of it, the code for that is client side.
Only thing you could do is to set the time of the shield to something high and have a bot re-prize the shield every 10 seconds or something (depending on how long it stays at 100%) but then youd have to *shipreset players to get their shields off.
