From FAQ, How can I rename ships and/or descriptions?
| Quote: | Menu will load ship images from ship#.bm2 and ship2.bm2 files from current zone directory, graphics directory, or ss root directory, each independently. Each will be scaled as necessary to fit the UI. This is enabled with the menu item "View/Zone-Specific Ships" which is off by default. The format of the description file "shipinfo.dat" follows. Ship names are also passed to the in-game code, if Priit wants to use them anywhere.
; Blank lines and those starting with semicolons are ignored.
; Leading and trailing spaces are removed.
; All lines must appear in the order stated below.
; Use * by itself as a placeholder for the default text.
; 8 ship names in normal order (max 16 chars).
Warbird
Javelin
Spider
Leviathan
Terrier
Weasel
Lancaster
Shark
; 8 ship descriptions for menu mouse-over.
; Max is 255 chars, but may be clipped by skin.
; Use * by itself here will use the ship name(s)
; defined above as "Select ship: ."
Select ship: Warbird.
Select ship: Javelin.
Select ship: Spider.
Select ship: Leviathan.
Select ship: Terrier.
Select ship: Weasel.
Select ship: Lancaster.
Select ship: Shark.
; Spectator description for menu mouse-over.
; Max is 255 chars, but may be clipped by skin.
Spectate (watch the game).
; Ship box description for menu mouse-over.
; Max is 255 chars, but may be clipped by skin.
Select one of eight ships to fly, or be a spectator. You can always change your mind while in the game |

that's what i did when i said i made a lvz file. i already have one that repalces a few graphics so i just tacked "file=shipinfo.dat" on the end of that section and ran buildlevel again and replaced the old lvz with this new one.
but the names ingame are still the same...

Just get their .lvz, debuild and re-build.

there's nothing wrong with the method, you don't need another zone's .lvz to do this
just build a .lvz with shipinfo.dat in it like the example, upload it, add it to misc:levelfiles= and that should be it

It's not working... i don't get it, i followed all the steps, checked and re-checked to make sure there wasn't a spelling error anywhere, everything matches up, but still the names in the games refuse to change.
I even put the shipinfo.dat lvz file in its own one and added it to the cfg along with the other, original lvz file. I've even took out the old one and just had the shipinfo.dat lvz in by itself. it refuses to work.

| Post your .lvz. This public or a private subarena? I know there was a bug with the public arena renaming ships (would work if you re-entered it via ?arena or ?go), but not sure if that was fixed.

Hmm... yeah, it's a public arena, but I tried re-entering via the ways you said and it still wouldn't work. Here's the lvz.
Ships1.lvz - 0.51 KB
LVZ Dump: INI
File downloaded or viewed 16 time(s)

Checked it out. It doesn't work with .38
My guess is that it's looking for shipinfo.dat in your zone folder, but can't find it because .38 doesn't extract the files. Same goes for ship images. The new .lvz-added ship previews on the main UI don't show because they're not in the zone folder.

So there's no way to do it on .38? Shoot. ...
You said the same went for ship images as well. Does that mean I can't do custom ship sets either? Who was in charge of making .38?!? Please tell me this'll be in .39.

I'm saying that's my guess. I don't know for sure, someone surely does.
I said the same goes for the ship images on the main UI - the main screen you usually see the eight ships to select - if the zone has its own .lvz-added ships, you should see them instead of the standard ones, but you don't - not unless you put the images into the zone folder yourself.

supposedly if you place a colon before the filename
| Quote: |
file=:ships.bm2
file=:shipinfo.dat
|
it will extract them
will verify this later, my server connection is not functioning atm

Slightly on topic:
commands.hlp works, although that is ingame and not on the menu.

yar, that's in-game
anyways, wait on the "file=:shipinfo.dat" - buildlevel.exe rejects it - I'm waiting for an explanation from Ekted on ssforum
