Added a new feature thats pretty well hidden now, Ignoring topics. At the bottom left of every topic, right above the Quick Quote. For logged in users, the link is visitable. Also attached to the link to ignore/unignore the thread, you'll see a number. Thats how many people currently have that topic ignored.
How well does it ignore a topic? Well, since I don't know of a simple SQL WHERE close to ignore topics, I had to manually throw together a few for loops.
On the front page, it won't highlight a forum if the only topics that are unread are ignored topics, but it will still show the topic in the last column if it was the last one posted in. On the forum view, it will completely remove the topic from view. If you wanted, I can make it still visitable, just never shown as unread. You'll still see the thread on the top of pages as the "next/last" topic, because I didn't feel like fixing that, as it is a horrible blob of a mod to have that there.
How to unignore a topic? Because I'm lazy, you have to Search for ignored threads. On the View Ignored List, I added that link there with your current thread ignore count. The little thread view isn't populated yet, because of the lazyness I've mentioned. You'll have to manually go into each topic and go to the bottom and click Unignore for now to unignore them.
So, if you actually plan on ever using this ignore feature, please vote above as to which ignoring method is better. I personally would like to still see the topic, just always marked as read. In a week, I'll either keep it the way it is, or change it to the method I'd prefer, depending on how you guys vote.

Added another feature to the Statistics page. Shows the Most Ignored Topics and Most Ignored Authors. So far, Smithy101 is winning, doubling the person next in line. I'm sure after a bit of time, he'll also up the Ignored Thread count too.

It is their privacy to ignore whomever they want. As to the ignoring, this poll has shown that people like to at least see the topic, but not have to click on it, and that a good majority of people like the happy cat.
Ignored threads are visible, but will be shown on the index and viewforum.php pages as read. In all other cases, such as the title of topics where it shows the next/previous thread and in searches, the topics will be marked as read/unread normally.
Then again, once you visit the forum, and come back later, all unread topics (including ignored ones) will be marked as read. So you don't have to worry about weird topics from god knows when being marked as unread in your searches.
I was also thinking of making an automated system in which a topic has been dead for a while (like a month) to be removed from user's ignored list. Why? In my opinion, usually a topic that is revived is either a) an idiot bumping it or b) someone actually asking something useful. What do you think of this?
(The real reason I suggest this is I need a way to keep the ignore table size down, just like the subscription size. If it gets too big, for specific users, it will add a large delay for them to view the forums. Nothing noticable, but something I'd like to keep under control.)

It was more a question of disbelief, ie "Why would anyone ignore 1st?"

Fixed. They had yet another section where it could set a topic as new or not that I didn't add it to.

I'd like a button next to the topic when viewing a forum so I can ignore it without going in... and it redirects me back to the forum

No offence to your work MGB, but I think its quite a pointless (new) feature. ignoring users is not that pointless, but ignoring whole topics..
It isn't like there are that much annoying topics around here.
(And if they are they should be moderated into the correct forum and you can ignore the whole (sub)forum instead :s)

Remember, I enjoy working with computers. I'm constantly surrounded by unfinished projects I'm currently working with, and enjoy taking on new tasks. In between finishing a homework assignment and starting another one, I'm sometimes in my tinkering mode. In this mode, I fix things that don't need fixed.
Why? Just for the hell of it. It goes with how I feel I run my life: if it isn't broken, fix it till it is.
