Metal Gear CTF cheats:
AgentX says something like "This tileset is copyright"
So I ask, where?
and he says somewhere, I think it was the bottom-right of the map or the site, but anyway,
I look there,
AND
NOTHING!!!
I SEE NOTHING!!!
THERE IS NO COPYRIGHT
I'M AFRAID THAT I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THE TILESET DOWN UNTIL I SEE A COPYRIGHT!! |

Who/what is JC?
I dont remember where it was, but I have seen somewhere that all parts of the game are copyright by the maker.
maybe:
http://www.shanky.com
or
http://www.subspacehq.com
or somewhere other.
AND I THINK that its unfair to copy titlesets, or maps... _________________ Me is me... |

JC stands for Julius Caesar and yes, you have to ask him before you start using HIS tiles |

Julius Caesar is the owner of Metal Gear CTF, and he made the map and the tileset.
I wouldn't use it, because it's lame. but do what you want |

Ah the age old issue of using other peoples works, be it maps, tiles, settings, whatever.
Firstly, it is my opinion that the author of a particular work has the right to decide on its usage, and therefore specific usage rights may vary from item to item / author to author.
If you have just taken and used MG's tiles without even asking them, I'd consider that unethical, if nothing else.
Knowing Jules, he would want to retain authoritive rights over his work, and rightly so.
You suggest that because no copyright is written onto the map, none exists?
Quote: | "If it doesn't have a copyright notice, it's not copyrighted."
This was true in the past, but today almost all major nations follow the Berne copyright convention. For example, in the USA, almost everything created privately and originally after April 1, 1989 is copyrighted and protected whether it has a notice or not. The default you should assume for other people's works is that they are copyrighted and may not be copied unless you know otherwise. There are some old works that lost protection without notice, but frankly you should not risk it unless you know for sure.
It is true that a notice strengthens the protection, by warning people, and by allowing one to get more and different damages, but it is not necessary. If it looks copyrighted, you should assume it is. This applies to pictures, too. You may not scan pictures from magazines and post them to the net, and if you come upon something unknown, you shouldn't post that either.
The correct form for a notice is:
"Copyright [dates] by [author/owner]"
You can use C in a circle © instead of "Copyright" but "(C)" has never been given legal force. The phrase "All Rights Reserved" used to be required in some nations but is now not legally needed most places. In some countries it may help preserve some of the "moral rights." |
At the end of the day, it is down to a specific author to decide what you can and cannot use of theirs.
I, for example, allow my tilesets to be distributed and altered freely.
However, my maps are generally used under a modified version of the Academic Free License, which essentially states that you can use, modify, copy, and redistribute my original work in any way but only after seeking my express permission to do so.
No, at the end of the day there is nothing anyone can do to stop you using those tiles, but if you were any kind of person you'd abide by the authors wishes. It doesn't take much to say 'May I please...?' |

It says at the bottom of his site "Metal Gear CTF (tm) Copyright 2002".
But it can't be the whole zone. Because they copied copyright material from Tribes 2 (the sounds) and you can't re-copyright copyrighted material. And, you need a name of who copyrighted it, so I'm afraid that is not only an invalid copyright, but it's copyrighting things he didn't make, which is illegal.
I will take the tileset down, as I'm smarter than to keep his tileset; I know the work it takes, if he wants it down I'll take it down. I'm looking for an alternative tileset now... any ideas?
I need one with all the letters and two sets of tiles that go in every direction; sort of like Metal Gear's, that's why I copied theirs.
I'm not to good at making tilesets; actually I suck at making ANYTHING graphical on the computer, but on paper I can do pretty well.
Still, I think that JC should revise his copyright and make it valid before saying that it includes the tileset. |

Yes, I have a scanner, although I'm only good at pencil drawings and also I can't draw lines 100% straight, so with a tileset it would only be black and white and I'd still have to move some pixels around...
good idea though, i'll check it out. |

I've got PhotoShop 7 and Paint Shop Pro 7 (photoshop is better but harder to understand), and your idea sounds great! I'll try copying some tiles out of other tilesets and using the colorize thingy in Paint Shop Pro to get different tiles.
I've found sections of tilesets I like, and I've never thought of copying them out and changing the color. |

Going into a computer game store, putting a few games in your backpack, and just walking out of the store is also a way to get software for free.
Edit: I don't do it, I'm making a point. |

just fyi you guys
the original Metal Gear tiles (they are up on the current new map right now in public MG arenas) were made by "groovy~" (or however it looks)
and the red/blue ones that were up I believe were made by someone named "Alphabot"
As far as copyrights go - there is absolutely nothing to worry about when the person that supposedly copyrighted the material has no money
the only way they can stop you from using it is legally, which takes a lot of money
furthermore if they themselves are inolved in some strange copyright mess (someone mentioned tribes audio) then you have even less to worry about because if they DID have the money to seek legal action, you could just wave that in their face and they'd have to back down or take a hit
finally - if they have lots of money and you do not, leave it the hell alone - money does equal power
-------
trademarking is a bit different and while their name is "Metal Gear CTF" and not just "Metal Gear" it's probably a trademark infringement anyways
-------
in the end when you get back to the tiles, I must say that you are a big jackoff if you don't ask for permission (assuming you knew you should) |

Its usually nice to give people credit for their work, as they are the ones that did it. Even if they have no money, and even if they couldn't stop you even if you wanted to, it also comes to moral. Would you want someone to do it to you? So why do it to someone else. |

Actually, I'm perfectly fine with people stealing my tilesets.
The person also mentioned net-banning me, which, as you can imagine, I DIDN'T want to happen; that's the main reason I took it down. |
