This is the most confused I've been in a while. I just recently bought a USB dongle so I can use wireless internet on my Wii and my DS(for when I get one). It's supposed to be easy to set up, and it's specifically made for the Wii and the DS, even though it can work for other things, too. It's a Datel WiFi Max USB dongle.

Anyway, I install the dongle software(damnit, I love the word dongle), and run everything according to instructions. It doesn't work, but I don't expect it to, since we have different settings on our router. My dad has the router set to automatically assign IPs based on the device's MacID, so I go in and add the MacID for both the Wii(set to 192.168.0.104), and the dongle as well(192.168.0.105), just in case. Then I went to the Wii, and added the SSID for the wireless access point that the dongle was configured to, and set the Wii to its IP that I gave it under DHCP settings on the router, and I also set the subnet mask, default gateway, and dns servers to match the info this computer has. I double checked the dongle settings, and the ssid was exactly the same as I had just entered on the Wii(case sensitive), it was set as a wireless access point with no encryption, so everything on all 3 components should be fine.

So when I go to actually connect the Wii, it starts the connection test, and I check the monitor for the dongle(haha), and the MacID of the Wii is showing up under "Connect Station List", so apparently it's getting at least that far. But the test always fails on the Wii. The strangest part is I got this to work once, but my computer froze and I had to reinstall all the software after I rebooted. No information has changed, but I've uninstalled and reinstalled countless times, and it still doesn't work. And something else weird, I have a "Wireless Connection" icon down in the system tray, just like the one I'd have if I had a wireless card on my computer and I was actually connecting to a wireless network. It always says "Limited or No connectivity", has high signal strength, and when I go to "details", it gives me the MacID of the dongle, and an IP address. The weird part here is that it's using 169.254.170.128, and not 192.168.0.105, like I assigned it through the router's DHCP. So... any idea what's going on? I obviously don't know a ton about networking, so I could be overlooking something simple.

Summary: My Wii sucks without a dongle, help me get it up.

Tubular Worlds was made by Dongle Software, an awesome piece.
Pity they left the games industry (can't blame them, hardly any profit) and focused on software services.

Do you realise that putting the ":" is redundant?

You're using DHCP *and* statically configured settings?

Yeah... my dad's idea. Well, we had statically configured settings first, and then he added the DHCP stuff, so we never bothered to change the settings on our computers. And every time I reboot I just go ahead and fill in the information manually. It makes me feel special, at any rate.

As for the Wii, it's not working on default settings, either. The only thing I'm really wondering about is why my wireless network has a strange IP. It would make sense to me that the dongle was set to draw its own ip statically(either in a config I haven't seen or hardcoded), and my router isn't allowing that IP. I actually tried turning DHCP server off, and it still didn't work, so it's probably not related to DHCP either.

I think that 169 IP is automatically assigned by windows when you get "Limited or No connectivity" and haven't set a static IP.

So... are you plugging the dongle into the Wii or a PC? Do you have a wireless router?

Into the PC, and no, I don't have a wireless router. That's what this dongle(lol) is here for.

Well, problem solved. I'm not sure of whether it was the dongle conflicting with the DHCP server or if I had the wrong bridge adapter selected, but I can play with it later. By the way, I'm making this post from my Wii. And yes, it is obnoxious.

Why not just use PCs all together? There would be fewer problems that way. I hate consoles, call me biased. sa_tongue.gif

Unfortunately, Super Smash Brothers isn't a PC game. I play pretty seriously, so I don't have much of a choice. icon_sad.gif

Yeah, my brother has an emu and he plays the old games they had back in the 90s, the original Nintendo games. Why on earth would you waste your money on a console that will be worthless later on. A new console will come, you will have to get used to the controllers and how it works. If you look at Windows it's basically the same, it just looks fancier and has more features. It will always suck and screw up when you really need it not to. You can usually just upgrade a PC.

Example: My N64 got old, i bought a PS2, it got old, I bought an Xbox, that got dumb so I bought a PS3. The ps3 sucked so I bought a Wii. I really love foreign products. Wii will get old, who knows what will come next. Computers are still here though. They won't go away any time soon. Stick with the PC. I honestly hate consoles. icon_rolleyes.gif

After all of that, if you're having fun doing that then power to ya. Have fun. icon_wink.gif

No shit.

I can't even count how many times I asked my parents to buy me video games and shit and had them say "You're 20 years old, go buy it yourself."

I've never bought a console and I never will. I hate them. My brother has an xbox but no one even plays it. I honestly don't see why people spend money on those things.

Run a software mod on that thing and install XBMC, you'll love that. Plus the softmods out for Xbox now can still run Live without a problem.

For the Wii and the DS... you would be better off buying a Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector (Supported only by win xp)
It will bridge the Connector to your current ethernet line
I have used this myself and it works wonderfully...

-OR-

you could get a USB->Ethernet thingy for the Wii.... thats what the ports on the back of it are for...

Your brother could also ship the xbox to me. I might even pay something for it.

I'll talk to him about selling it. He always say he is going to give me stuff, then he turns around and sells it to someone else. Maybe I can ask for it, then he might sell it to you. sa_tongue.gif

Hmm, I could keep it and install Linux. icon_lol.gif

Lol, this topic is still going? Anyway, emulation for SSB doesn't work. For one, I don't know if they ever actually did manage to emulate the GC. They probably have by now, but I doubt it runs at 60 frames a second without any response time lag. I play in SSBM tournaments, so when I practice, it has to be on actual GC controllers with a realistic framerate and response time. Actually, a PERFECT framerate and response time.

And BD, no offense, but you're a Linux user. I really doubt you're a gamer at all. I still play my 64 all the time(at least all the time when compared to total time spent playing games). Emulators aren't anywhere near the same. Besides, the DS is a way better emulator, since I can take it with me in my car.
