debian sarge would be my recommendation.
It really depends what apps you wanna run on the server. _________________ Rediscover online gaming. Get Subspace | STF The future...prehaps |

Exchange Server likes to take up as much resources as it can. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to run an exchange server and a web server (including a sql server) on the same Windows 2k/2k3 box. I'm not sure how postfix or a UNIX alternative performs in comparison as I have only done some reading about exchange & sql server resource management. _________________ Oldbie Server Help |

Any kind of website craps you should use *nix for. Windows simply sucks for that. Lets put it like this, Microsoft doesnt even use there own products _________________ I know that I myself cannot do anything, that I will fall, and that I am a sinful man, but I know that I can do ANYTHING through God Almighty, whom strengthens me. |

CentOS (based upon Redhat) is very popular for servers. Any debian based system works wonders, and which one to choose is based upon what type of applications you want to run and how new of software you want. Gentoo is pretty popular for servers as well, but in most of those cases, that is either admins really knowing what they are doing (ie: setup distcc machines and have their own portage repository), or those that use it as test machines (ie: don't mind if it breaks). |
