If your going for quality, then try the Creative PCMCIA Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook or Sound Blaster X-Fi.
If your going for just something to work, give me your mail address *cough*So-I-can-send-a-bum-to-rape-and-kill-you*cough*, and I'll send you one for free (just requires shipping and handling fees). Or you can find on on ebay.com.

What does your motherboard come with, because 9 times out of 10, I'm pretty sure that it will do just fine. Speakers make a much bigger difference in sound than comparing high/low quality sound cards.
On that note, good sound cards are so over. Hardware accelerated TCP/IP is where it is at now-a-days. That thing could run Subspace completely without a problem. |

Audiotek AC'97 won't be Vista compatible? That'd fuck over the vast majority of PC users. |

I suggest you shouldn't get vista, unless your using somthing for 64 bit, or if you want a better GUI in your every day life. Other then that, vista is just going to use up most of your resources. I don't know yet if MS is going to make a new GDK+ for vista, but they'll still make SPs for XP users and have support along with it.
Other then that, I don't know what the hell I'm talking about, if that answers any of your questions. |

blah-er... shut up.
It all depends on the specifications of your computer if you want Vista.
It may not eat all processes up. |

I would expect the computer would be way more expensive than todays computers that are for sale.
You would need high specifications if you want a fast Vista running on a computer.
I tried Vista and it sucked for me... too much of these security alerts - you have to go through a whole menu just to get to Task Manager, |

As far as I know, the Aero GUI will consume greater system resources than the current XP GUI. Though, realistically, who wouldn't expect that? As hardware excels, the software makers (apparently) have an obligation to make overall performance the same as ever .

Vista won't be out until January (at the very earliest). If you're going to buy Vista so you can play games, then there's no reason for you to buy a DX9 card. DX10 will come out and you'll have to upgrade when it becomes mainstream (which is still further down the road).
I play Guild Wars and Continuum, and as far as I know, I'll shell out the money for Cedega rather than simply buying Vista. I don't like the idea of supporting the monopolist company, I don't like the idea of DRM-compliancy, the DMCA, ugh, it's all just bullshit that I shouldn't have to deal with. |

Aero is designed to take advantage of the video card, so it will take greater total system resources, but most of those resources will be the video card, leaving the processer even more free than it is with standard XP.
Play with Linux at all? Give XGL a try. Even with all the eye candy turned on, on a AMD 1400+ with a Geforce 2MX, XGL takes much less resources than standard Xorg. |

Still give it a shot, you'd be surpised. Anytime you resize a window, move it to another desktop, etc, it is buffered nicely on the video card itself. Bonus is that OpenGL games and any video Overlays work nicer together. |

I hate the new desktop icons, and I hate the sidebar.
(FYI, the sidebar on the real Windows Vista looks nothing like the one in the XP-Vista Transformation pack screenshots) |

The window title bars remind me of kde, which I associate with slowness. |
