It doesn't matter if he's on dial up, he could always connect his modem to the phone line anyway.

And if he is on dial up he'd be screwed because he'd need the phone line for his internet connection.

On the other hand if he has a phone socket next to his computer he could just plug the phone in there...

Uhm, so, yeah "NOVIE", how are you even planning on doing this?

I use Phone Bot demo. You can find themes for it to make the popup box be just the name/number. Can disable all sounds and the answering machine. The only difference between the demo and buying it is full answering machine support and one nag-popup when you start the program. Speak support in this is great, as when you are playing games, having the speakers say the name/number is better than a popup, but you can disable this as well.

I know of others, but cannot easily find my list of programs I tried under Windows for caller id. It has been a while..

If MGB recommended it, it will be good. No worries.

Actually, there are programs that can warn you of an incoming call even if you're using the phone line with your modem, so you can disconnect and answer, or let the program record the message ; I don't know the name of the program, but I know it exists

Sure, so the modem would know the difference between the voice and the remote system and the program would only listen to the voice? That'd be so cool.
