Ya so me and my friend are planning on making a game. I am going to collage to learn c++ or some kind of programming language and then make a job out of it. So then I thought to myself why not make a game that other people can enjoy and I can also? Problem is I have NO idea on how to start any such thing.
So I was hoping some of you could give me some pointers and directions on where to go. I will just give some stuff that I mainly need help with and then mabye you guys could give me some websites and such. Just to give you guys an idea of what type of game I was planning on. Its I guess any kids/persons dream world. Its a huge 3D city, every room, every object accessable and is in play. Create your own character. Also its multiplayer so you can fight other people in the game also. One of my favorite features in bullettime (this is where you can slow down time so you can dodge bullets, objects ect). Possibly might throw in some super human powers? Hijack cars, multiple weapons. Its a lifelike city that has people walking around, cars driving, police that give you tickets, ect. Thats all that comes to mind right now. I always get more ideas during school and never write them down. Here are some things I need help with.
Programming language - Well im not so sure in which language I should do this in. I heard java is a good language to build games in. Not sure.
Graphics - My friend is doing the graphics in photoshop. Im not sure if this is the best tool to do 3D work in. Its really the big things such as buildings, cars, people models, guns, other things. I can name a few more to give you guys a better idea, blood, trees, grounds, appliances, ect.
Animations - Of course a game to this high of standerds needs some good animations. Leaves falling, people walking, wheels moving, you know all that high tech stuff. Any ideas on what program to use for this kind of stuff?
Map Editor - I was hoping once I get into this I could make a program for my game so that I can place the graphics on the map using a program. I could open it up in it and then import graphics into it. Place them where I want and then I have the new map made. Any ideas for this?
I think thats about it. Any help would be appriciated. If this gets good and if me and my friend can do this Im hoping to make this my career. Just charge people for this. Anyway I hope you guys can help me. Thanks in advance. |

Woah, hold on there tiger.
A whole 3D world? Even a city...
You haven't even learned C++ yet and you are already charging on the gates of heaven...
I suggest you scale down a wee bit and start by first learning C++ then next creating small projects to gradually build your experience.
Create games similar to these and etc.
Hell, even PC-Man can make a very taming educational experience (it includes AI npcs, level map, special effects, controlable character - all the basics), or even space invaders.
Don't laugh.
Also, if you're making a 3D world, you would want to use models/meshes and textures.
Photoshop is definately not the tool of choice. |

Honestly, do you really want to create a game in the first place? It's the ideal, the dream of most programmers, and yet they often learn that they'd rather be working at IBM or something. _________________ Oldbie Server Help |

Make a game on 101 ways to kill Bill Gates and have the user do the evil deed of it. I may play it then. |

start by making pong. Then worry about your game.
Also bullet time wouldn't work in multiplayer unless you're willing to slow everyone in the world down anytime someone uses it. |

Ya you have a point, mabye make it so people have a option to fight, so they like "challange" an other player and if accepted only they can feel the affects of bullettime.
Also you are right that im starting a bit to big, any ideas on how to make small games and work up to it? |

You can't make a gigantic fully-interactive 3D world game in JAVA (hell, it has taken the 3DR guys 10 years to make DNF, which is to be that, in C++ and they're not yet done).
Especially if you want it to be a MPOG, you definitely going to want C++ backbone stracture there.
Well, maybe you can, but I'll heavily suggest against going there.
Trust stroustrup. |

Oh dont listen to Nancy.
ZingZangZor and Bak had good suggestions about where to start; gives you a much better idea how exactly how much work youve gotta do for the framework before you even get to the 3d part.
In a slightly related note, Quake2 has been ported to Java. Sure, its not that fully-interactive 3d hooba-joo, but its certainly more than lots of people will give Java credit for. _________________ There are 7 user(s) ignoring me right now. |

Just as soon as you stop talking like the regular wannabe nazi angst teen dying for attention and the world owes me for existing, making retarded fabricated jokes and calling women fat whores because they intimidate you.
I "act like that" when it is merited.

Usually blitzbasic for starters... if not, C++. |

C++ Is hard to learn for begginers. Blitzbasic or Visual Basic would be better to start off with first, then once he goes through those, he should be ready for C++. |

Bullocks!
People who need to go through "easement" of code are weak.
If in the past you learned basic or pascal then it makes good basis for understanding the core of how code works, but you don't need it.
You don't need to learn C to learn C++.
You don't need to learn vB before you learn C++.
And you definitely don't need to learn blitzbasic to handle C++.
All you need is a good head and intelligence.
There's enough decent material for getting you from a clueless level and teaching you upwards untill you know C++ well enough to go solo.
The more you practice along the way, the more you read and enlarge your knowledge, the better you get.
It's as simple as that.
And most PC games are written in C++.
Especialy modular-based games, and server-client model games.
Amatuers who might find C++ too hard run to blitzbasic for rescue and some amatuers make decent games with it.
But C++ is still the most powerful, AFAIK, next to assembly (but you can't make a module app in assembly, it's all hardcode).
Console games, AFAIK, are coded via their own assembly language, or ported from C++ to the aforementioned. |

Cypherus, where did you find out that "C++ was hard to learn for beginners." Thats not something that should be said because everyone has their own way of interpreting things.
Assassin, make a text based RPG with command line C++. |
