Ok as some of you people might kno i might be getting another computer. So im tryign to make a server for my network because my main computer is running pretty low on memory (I have like 30% of my hard drive left )
Anyway i want to make this new computer into my personal server so i can host continuum games and ect. But the MAIN reason is so i can save files on the server such as some of my heavy files. So say for example i had this huge game i wanted to save on the server, i could like take it and load it from my computer and play it but its still on the server saved and not on my main computer. Does anyone know how to do this and could give me some help or links to where i can see how to do this? Thanks. |

It really wouldn't be smart to play a game from another drive on the network because the OS doesn't have direct access to the drive and because there's a network between the systems.
Both would cause the game to be slow, maybe very slow.
It would be possible to have a "server" sharing files (over Netbios) on the network, for smaller files the network would be fast enough to get the destination computer to open the file without any lags or other problems, for your "heavy" files (like big movie files) it could give problems.
Just move a bunch of your "small" files (I don't know if you have any .mp3 files on your computer, but you could easily play them from the network while they don't have to be on the main computer) to the "server".
You could create a sort of "virtual drive" on your (main) computer (like X:) which would actually point at a shared directory at your "server", if you'd want to do this I could show you how to do this. |

Ya see i was just ising a game as example but if i cant do that its fine, its mainly the files i want to transfer. There could be like (Drive B) for the server so then i liek click on that so i could get files off of there from my main computer. So if you could show me what your talking about that would be great. |

Hosting your own network FTP will also work. |

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.
It allows FTP clients to upload files to/download files from FTP servers.
A nice Windows client for this would be FileZilla (I don't really like the server they created now).
Sharing files through Netbios is probably easier for you.
To create a drive on your computer which is linked to another directory on the "server", go to Start -> Run.
Type "cmd" there to make a black console pop up.
Get the server's IP address on the network (open the console on the server, then type "ipconfig" in it).
Share a directory on the server.
On your main computer you'll have to see which directories are shared on the server, type, on the main computer, in the console: "net view \\x.x.x.x" where x.x.x.x is the server's IP address.
Now, to create a "drive" on the main computer, type "net use U: \\x.x.x.x\name_of_shared_dir", substitute the "U" with the drive letter you want it to have, the x.x.x.x with the server's IP address, and the "name_of_shared_dir" with the name of the shared directory on the server.
I tried to explain this quickly because I'm in a hurry, sorry if things are still vague to you.
I'll try to give you examples too after you provided information about what you want to share and what you want to be a drive. |
