Mine GO BOOM wrote: | Think of if this way: This game was designed for 56k users (well, actually, less than that). So their max download is 5k per second. That is not always reached, but its a good guess on what a 'peak' time would show for your server. So your upload needs to be atleast 5k per second per player before you notice some really crappy lag in game play.
On average, players use maybe 1k up/down bandwidth a second, but if there are 10 people in one spot, that number increased greatly, as you have to forward everyone's positions nine times each. |
so like - if you have a T1 or better you could probably be a decent host, otherwise just get other hosting

There's a bandwidth limit on a dedicated server??
It might be enough if the zone doesn't get too popular. _________________ This help is informational only. No representation is made or warranty given as to its content. User assumes all risk of use. Cyan~Fire assumes no responsibility for any loss or delay resulting from such use.

The average player uses 5 kb/s depending on how much graphics are in the zone, the speed, etc. So, if you take 5 kb/s * 60 that's 300 kb a minute. Now, take 300 kb and multiply that by 60 and that's 18,000 kb an hour. Multiply that by 24 and you get 432,000 kb every 24 hours. If you convert that to MB: 1000 kb = 1 mb. So, that's 432 mb of bandwidth every 24 hours. Multiply 432 mb by 31 (average amount of days in a month) and that's 13,392 mb. 1000 mb = 1 gig. So, that's approximately 13 gigs of bandwidth in a month for 1 player.
That's assuming there's at least 1 player connected 24/7 (which could be a bot easily). There's of course a lot of other factors involved but depending on how many players you expect 200 gigs could be more then enough or not anywhere near enough. |
