I doubt anyone knows the exact day.

I can't find any info (emails, logs) of when I started working on it, and I know Priit was working on it long before I got involved. Shrug.

Perhaps exact date when Continuum was first released publically?

they say november of 1997 was when the pc version of subspace was released so its probably a little later if you're going by continuum version.

Wrong, you have to include beta too.

Also, that is only month specific, not date.

Doubt he would even know, you're best bet would be VIE, I am sure they'd have it in their records somewhere.

What I am saying is: I doubt anyone on Continuum will know. I mean, like honestly, why would have that logged excpet the original owners for when they made it?

You want when the original game, Subspace, was made, or Continuum? Or do you want Sniper, the original name for Subspace? And for either case, when it was first publicly released, first real beta release, first alpha release, or first day someone wrote int main inside a C file?

Public beta for Subspace was 1996. Commercial release was in 1997. For Continuum, the oldest file I have related to it was Client 0.15, with file dates as follows:
Code: Show/Hide
Client.exe - 1/22/2001
menu.dll - 1/21/2001
menures.dll - 10/10/2000

The Subspace Council email with Priit announcing Continuum, date: 1/21/2001 9:23 PM
Quote:
New client is so far that we can start beta testing.

You can download it from -removed- after creating account. To get account, fill in bottom form in login page, "New user:" - your subspace name, "Choose password:" - password you want to use, "Authorization code:" - -removed-

Click download in the bottom of screen to get Client.zip, unzip it to your subspace directory and run client.exe. Use same page to report bugs, I'll explain how tomorrow

To be able to play with new client server needs to be configured to accept it. Create directory version1 in subspace server directory and copy client.exe to version1\subspace.exe. Recycle the zone for it to take effect. I've set it up in all SSCU zones, but recycled only SSCU Death Star Battle
SSCU DSB Events
SSCU Euro League
SSCU TW League
now and will recycle other zones in the morning when there is less players

This is closed beta, DO NOT GIVE client out to anybody.

Removed links/password, since technically, his site is still working, and Bugtraq still shows bugs. Last one being from Ekted on June 18, 2004 talking about cannot map Thor to the right control key. And Ekted, you still havn't fixed my crashing bug (#1557).

Source control is good if you like to delete lines of code or have multiple people working on it

Here's some more history for ya:

Code: Show/Hide

From:   "Priit Kasesalu" <email removed>
Date:   Wed, 4 Oct 2000 02:58:01 +0200
Subject:   Re: [sscouncil] new client

Since I can't leagally distribute Subspace graphics nor sounds, I will
release it as game engine, not game (basically exe file + ini file).
So, it will be called 'Continuum game engine'.
In ini file you can configure what sounds and graphics to use and also
game title.

So, somebody (hopefully with copyright holder's permission) should
package it with Subspace graphics and sounds and give it a name.

I suggest that name will contain word Subspace...

Having more than one person working on (ie editing) the same file or even the same block of functionality is completely retarded. Companies that have the "everyone touches everything" attitude deserve to burn in corporate hell.

Aww, I use it for an easy changelog and very good diffs to see if I made a mistake somewhere when I changed something. icon_razz.gif What do you find wrong with it?

Definitely. Have two separate coding styles in the same module or even the same file is ridiculous. I'm just worried that I'll be stuck working for a crappy coding company. icon_sad.gif
