Thought you might appreciate this effort and if you support it you might spread it around to any old infantry contacts you've got.

I figure Grav would love this. I might give it a run around next week when I have some free time.

I have all their files mirror on my PSU account, mostly because I want to have it as fast as possible for a shit-ton of people. You can get all the files through this link.

Infantry was made by the people who created Subspace (Jeff and Rod). After they left VIE, they made their own company called Harmless Games, and Infantry was their only released game. Sony bought them out, which is where the game is now at. None of the original people from Subspace/Harmless Games has anything to do with Infantry anymore, which is why some people say it began to suck (that, or Sony kills anything they touch).

Source: Wikipedia: Infantry (computer game)

Infantry Online is a two-dimensional, top-down, multiplayer, combat, computer game utilizing complex soldier, ground vehicle and space-ship models on typically complex terrains. Players may choose from a list of game zones to enter, each zone having a unique style of gameplay.

History

Sometime in the late 1990's, now-defunct Virgin Interactive Entertainment (VIE) began to develop a game called Sniper, was later renamed Subspace, which has evolved into today's Continuum. It has been speculated Subspace was one of the major causes of VIE's bankruptcy, as the project was free for many years, it was a drain on the companies resources with no actual income. Some of the developers of Subspace bonded together to form the Harmless Games company to develop a new game engine, the project was named Infantry.

The game was developed, gained a cult popularity and was picked up by Brainscan Development Corporation, also known as Brainscan Interactive, as publisher. GameFan, the parent company of Brainscan Interactive, went bankrupt and hadn't paid its employees in months. The lead designer of Infantry, Rod (Rodvik) Humble, was offered a job with Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and left Harmless Games a few months into these tough times. Larry J. Cordner (LJC) also found another job, however, stayed with the development team until shortly after Harmless Games was bought by Sony Online Entertainment. Harmless Games, and its sole game, Infantry Online, was bought by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) from Brainscan Interactive for an undisclosed sum.

The two remaining developers, Jeff Petersen (programmer) and Jerimy Weeks (Artist and Zone designer) were hired by SOE to continue development of the game. Some time later, SOE had them develop Cosmic Rift (CR), an offshoot of Infantry meant to rival Continuum. CR was a relative failure, compared to Infantry and Continuum, however maintains a small but loyal following. In October 2001, Petersen was transferred to EverQuest 2 development and Weeks was laid off. Game development stagnated. In May 2002, SOE rehired Weeks and introduced a monthly $6.95 pay-to-play plan for SOE's three small action games: Infantry, CR and Tanarus, however, both Infantry and Cosmic Rift remain free to play with limited access.

Game setting

The time is set several centuries ahead of the present. There is a war between the government (The Collective) and the various rebelling moon colonies of the outer solar system. The Collective is a pure democracy, every single citizen has a voting unit in which they vote on every single issue, although more often only on the issues that conern them. The rebels are mainly located in the outer colonies of the solar system and are a vast minority compared to the large populations on Earth and Mars. The rebels feel their colonies are being exploited for resources and labour due to the fact that they have little voice on what is decided. The citizens of the larger populations cannot understand why people would rebel from a system where everyone has a say and thus the war. Titan has the largest population of the outer rim colonies and therefore the major battles are between them and the Collective army, however, many colonies provide militia and able bodies to the cause of groups such as the Europan mercenaries. Due to the chaos many privateers have emerged, such as the Morgan Raiders who will throw in with anyone providing the credits, although, they have no particular love for anyone.

Uh, mine go boom, I have been leaving notifications of this for the past year...LoL.

I'm already playing there since last year, then host chickened out, and now it's back up again and I'm already there.

You are somewhat late in reporting this. icon_wink.gif

"Infant-free" was ran by a stupid kid called dave(somenumbershere) whose the kind of people I wouldn't waste spit on if they were in the desert asking for water.
Short story shorter, they were using keyloggers on fools who were stupid enough to run his game, he's now gone, good riddance.

InfinityZone is ran by aaerox, a friend of catid, who's responsible for creating a "biller" for the old INF mini-server which also override its player limit and allow him to add functions to it.

And mine go boom, the wiki is horrible, please don't quote it as any valid source.

LOL, sony tried to rival Continuum? A game that has less then 1500 players?

SubSpace, boasts a nice ten thousands player base or so with over four-hundred-thousand aliases with somewhat decent playing time.
After introducing P2P, SOE could barely grow over a single one thousand player base, for both INF&CR.

So how does Priitk fit into Infantry? (like i've heard people talk about..)
Mine GO BOOM - Sat Aug 06, 2005 1:23 am
Post subject:
Priit doesn't. He was offered, but never accepted. Priit makes all his money elsewhere. You might have heard of some of his money-making projects; Kazaa, Skype (what is taking all his time right now).

It's not like he's making money directly from the revenue models.
He's making money by being paid by the companies who publish these for programming duties (maintenance, adding features, etc.).

Whats the probability Sony will find out and issue a cease and disist (or w/e) - because they'd be loosing money from it?
Gravitron - Sat Aug 06, 2005 4:46 am
Post subject:
They already know.
They also know that the server host could care jack shit about their letters.
And since that's the only length they'll goto (because real lawyers cost money, and INF isn't worth even an amatuer coder-time to fix the game), it ends there.

Well, I personally liked Cosmic Rift once I got the hang of it. Though the astroid storms were kind of cheesy. I liked the ability of converting the minerals at the trade stations, etc. Setting up attack turrets, hiding in gas-clouds, so on so forth. The other neat thing that I liked was the ability to turrent onto server-spawned ships that had special weapons if I remember right. I also liked how CR had more ships or variety.

Essentially, I liked it because it had continual development.

Infantry was fun also. Until they took out the big turrents in no mans land. icon_sad.gif

I was in an office store today.
I bought a VOIP phone which supported Skype (they all did, but I'd prefer VOIP).
There even was a real "Skype phone", I guess that'd be something to earn money on.
Too bad it didn't support VOIP, I would've bought it if it did. sa_tongue.gif

Well what's wrong with Skype?

You can get a full phone system for a hell of a lot cheaper than getting a package from your ISP.

Priit Kassaselasu (IIRC), was one of the...three? coders who created kazaa.

I pronounce it preet'k, or when I really had it for him, prick-tech.

I suppose it's easier to say Ori'K than Jeff'P, Rod'H or Priit'K.

The links on that site are all completely dead, but a mirror can be found on:

Infinity Zone Files

You'll need Setup080405l.exe and client080405l.zip, install the first, unzip the latter over the installation. Run it, refresh the zone list and you should be able to join the zones(Arena, CM, TP and some other zone).

That's nice. The links are dead probably because Sony requested them to be removed as it is -their- property.

True, I didn't notice your mirror - I was referring to the links on the site. Regardless now there are two mirrors then.

(Perhaps you could edit your first post and add the new mirror to it as well, for ease of information gathering)

I was wondering. Did SS come out before Cosmic Rift? Im guessing that the creators of SS had something to do with the fact that the 2 games are very much alike (gameplay and a few other things). Just curious. This was a great thread too. I liked reading it. The history of these games are all very interesting to read.

SubSpace came before Cosmic Rift.
SubSpace, in basis, was created by Rod Humble (designer), Jeff Petersen (programmer) and Juan Sanchez (artist).
Cosmic Rift, in basis, was created by Jeff Petersen (designer/coder) and Jeremy Weeks (designer/artist).

SS and INF contain far more history, industry cliches, politics, social mechanics and relationships than almost any game out there.
