If you will be running your zone off a computer in which your IP number changes often, I highly recommend setting a fake DNS value into this description. You can do so by adding ss://yourzonename.subspace.fake.com. If you do have a DNS always pointing to your current IP, set that ss:// to your DNS name.

i'm not really understanding this at all ^^

my server isn't up 24/7 and neither is my connection so my ip does keep changing. i have been just dishing out my ip for now and my friends just edit their favourite.lst file accordingly.

however now we want to start inviting in a few more people, and not only is it a hassle to keep dishing out my ip, i don't like the idea of giving it out to so many people anyway (since i hardly ever use a firewall).

i read this dns bit of the tutorial and it sounds like what i need but i don't understand how it works, can somebody expand on it a little for me?!

Things (domains?) like www.subspace.net can also be accessed by an IP. The idea is you type in the .com address and a DNS server converts this to an IP address.
I think some dial-up people have experimented with no-ip.com as their DNS thingy, this requires some extra software that contacts no-ip.com servers telling it your new IP everytime you dial-out. (Most of this post is a complete guess, feel free to ignore it icon_smile.gif).

If you do Find Servers, it helps update your IP from the directory server for them. You don't actually need to do the fake DNS if you are visable on the directory servers.

Okay. It's pretty easy actually.

ss://yourzonename.subspace.fake.com.

Let's say your zone name is Rizz.

So, you'll do this.

Code: Show/Hide

[Directory]
IP=sscentral.ds98.com,sscentral.subspace.inet.fi,sscentral.subspace.net,sscentral.subspacehq.com
Description=Welcome to my test zone. ss://Rizz.subspace.fake.com.

Hope that helps. icon_biggrin.gif

Supposing I did do that, then took out all the directory servers from the [Directory] section, then changed the server's IP address, would the fake DNS automatically find and use the new IP address?
