I guess for your DNS server fails or is unreachable, you can still view some websites this way.

hosts file override DNS names to point to a specific address... When provided by a 3rd party - use with care - you won't know if the IP address specified is legit or not.
I use the hosts file to identify and block ad-host sites by re-routing the DNS as 127.0.0.1. Works well.

0.0.0.0 works to, especially if you run a webserver
