wvdailconf cannot detect any modem and dialup is the only way I can get internet. Satellite is not affordable, nor is ISDN (in fact, less people use ISDN than do dialup and is at least 3x or 4x more expensive than dialup for just less than twice the speed).

I don't know what you're on about, but usually people who use ISDN get a speed that's twice as good as a regular PTSN connection. Then again, if you have ISDN, just use a dual connection.
Sat's nice, but I'm not sure if you mean by using a two-way connection (which are only available to companies). For using a one-way sat you will still need something upstream for your connection.
Why can't you afford ISDN? It's not like the internet account would cost over 60$ a month.

Dial-up costs ~$10/month from national or local service providers. $60/month is a lot for some people -- it would be for me.
And L.C., try this tutorial if you haven't already.

I believe the Ubuntu Forums may be of better use, as there are people who spend all their free time going around there sharing knowledge about different issues. Here, you have a couple of people who know a general overview or a couple of specific things, and only check every so often.
