Does anyone have any good tutorials on reverse engineering? Im looking for some and wondering if you guys had any tutorials.

There are tons of things you can reverse engineer, would you like to be specific?

Like, are you trying to determine how parts of your cellphone works so you could add extra hardware to it? Reverse engineer the XBox 360? Taking apart your dryer to remove the overly loud buzzing noise in your new apartment? Strip out Continuum's encryption code? Extending your house's plumbing system to a new room/floor? Figuring out the secret ingredients to gummy bears?

Software.

What part of software? You looking into figuring out a networking protocol? Trying to determine how the software interacts with other software on the same system? Custom designing a parallel port application for a really old IBM PS/2 case LCD? Stripping out ASM directly from an application and reusing it without actually knowing how it works? Trying to find which ASM to strip out? Deciphering a proprietary file format? Hijacking a running application to send it messages it wasn't originally designed for, and handling functions instead with your own? Trying to change the icon for Word?

Everything. Okay? Then it covers all bases. Oh, but that stripping out ASM directly from an app and reusing without actually knowing how it works sounds good. icon_smile.gif

Anything you have or can find on it, I want. I want to read all of it and try anything I can. I have time to learn. So, anything you can find. Probably server software is what I mainly want to reverse engineer, but anything else too.

**edit: Ah, okay master guru MGB. I see what you did. You gave me things to search. lol Excellent work. Wow. lol. You didnt have to speak in riddles lol.

Lol, MGB cracks me the fuck up....

Why didnt you use the...HANDY DANDY GOOGLE TAG?

Actually, I wasn't trying to get him to Google on his own, as I knew he wouldn't. He asked a very open ended question, I just tried to narrow it down. I assumed from the start he is trying to do something illicit with Continuum or ASSS and teased the information out of him.

I don't want ASSS to get a bad reputation.

I re-plumbed a bathroom once, that stuff sucks. Crawling around under houses, soddering that crap, reading about all the different valves and stuff you need. Next time I'll take being gouged by some fat plumber.

What I want to do has nothing to do with Continuum. Its an interesting subject to explore, and I want to get in on it. Str0ke told me about DefCon and I googled some footage of previous DefCons. I saw the 2005 version and one of the contests consisted of reverse engineering. I heard about it once before but never researched it, so I want to learn now.

reverse engineering is hard....having had a small go at revese egineering continuum reallised i was wayy outta my depth tongue.gif, but i got a debugger to attach which is not very easy to do...

You need to understand how the computer and os works. And u need to understand assembly to reverse engineer...

Yeah, but that's always been the problem with people on these boards. Usually when they ask for something they only ask a really fucking open-ended question that can be answered several different ways from sunday, or they ask something that could easily be responded to by doing a quick google search.

It's like with the "I need a bot!" threads.
NoobehAdmin: I ned a bot!
Us: Oookay.. Well you can download a MervBot Core.
NoobehAdmin: u sux. I need cuztom!
Us: Well, there are "thousands" of plug-ins for Merv..
NoobehAdmin: CUZTOM!!1 Every1 has MerBot. >(
Us: Cause there is no point in redoing the code for a bot that there is a decent quality already out there for...
NoobehAdmin: Fuck u nubz.

Give up this uber fanboy-ism; its fucking annoying. When you were making TWCore bots you wouldnt stop ranting about how great TWCore is, before that it was Merv and Im sure before THAT it was how delicious a McDonalds cheeseburger is.

We get it, you really like the things you like. Shut up already.

Also, for the record:
Typically, you dont need to reverse-engineer something thats open source.

Yes, please!

That would be so funny, if Priit Kasesalu made a book called "Continuum encryption for Dummies"... But, that dream will never come true. icon_sad.gif

My question was open ended, but it was open ended for a reason. I want ANY tutorials you guys found on the subject as a whole. I could have been specific if I wanted something specific, but thats not the case.

Its too open-ended, thats your problem. Its not some magical language or art that people master, its just a process using various bits of knowledge. What you need to know heavily depends on what youre trying to do, hence all the questions.

Everytime you flame me and give me special attention it makes me feel warm inside. I love you Cerium.

Install Age of Empires II, decompress empires2_x1.dat (it's raw DEFLATE), and figure out what all that crap is.

That's what I'm working on right now.

PS: The above post was just scary.
