Post subject: My computer is going really slow..

Well, I don't know what it is, but my computer is going slow. I can usually solve these problems on my own, but this time I'm beat. I tried scanning for viruses and deleting viruses, but speed didn't change. Its slow on startup. I took out some startup programs. Startup is still slow. I don't want to try anything else just yet, but I need help. Any suggestions? Any possibilities?

Im running windows XP Media Center Edition,
Intel P4 CPU 3.00GHz
2.99 GHZ, 1.99GB of RAM

**Also theres a delay when I try to open a program.

Well, if you have like 100 icons on your desktop, it would be a good idea to get it down to 20.

A few things could be wrong...

Your system could be over heated, because of dust inside acting as a instillation. Which can be solved by taking compressed air, opening up the tower, and spraying it all off.

You have some services running in your background, that could be taking up your CPU and RAM resources. Which can be dealt with, by using Alt+Ctrl+Del, and then selecting the processes tab, and looking at things, that you might have put on but no longer need any more.
Also go to your control panel, make sure your on classic view, then go to Admin tools, and open Component Services. Select Services (local) and check to make sure you don't anything you don't want on.

Your files on your hard drive could be to far spread apart. Which all you have to do is defrag your hard drive. Also I suggest you disk clean up before you do that, on everything.

You could have your settings up to high, go to system properties, then select advanced, and under perfomence, click settings and choose won't you don't want.
Or lower your res down a bit, which can be found in the display.
And if you want to improve your virtual memory, go to System: Advanced: Performance: Settings: Advanced: Virtual Memory: Change: and change the initial size to 1149 mb, max to 4096 mb, as long as you have a large hard drive, you should be okay.

You Have a integrated graphics card, and sound card. Your computer runs a lot faster with a processor just for these tasks, I suggest you get them.

Start->Run->Msconfig

That usually helps me out when this happens sometimes. Go through your startup tab and see if you have alot of things checked, if so, uncheck them all except stuff you really need to start on startup, like me, the only things i got on startup is my Kav and Trillian.

Background desktop

I know it sounds silly, but ive actually had this happen to me a couple times. Change your background on desktop and see if it changes...something stupid but simple.

Download TuneUp Utilities

This program actually helps ME out alot when cleaning up stuff around my computer. Try it out.

Adaware + Spybot Combo

If you havent checked for spyware, do so now. Too much of it slows your comp down a shitload.

Windows XP Settings

Go through your control panel display properties and somewhere in there, there should be some advanced settings. I put everything to be "Best Performance" versus the "Best Appearance" option. It helps a bit.

Defragmentation

After you finish doing all of the above...defrag your comp since everything is probably clean now

Dum Dum Dummmm

If all else fails, format your comp and reinstall. Something I would never do, no matter the circumstances.

Ever since I started using ccleaner my computer has run so nice. Then I got DriveDiscovery to find deleted files and wipe them over 7 times, and my computer ran much nicer after that. I think it was just a matter of cleaning up all the old crap that got garbled up on the HD.

I have a desktop full of icons and hundreds of applications installed yet my computer loads up from switch on to windows desktop ready to use in under 45 seconds. What slows down the boot up is all those programs running in the systray and at start up

^^ this is msconfig on steroids, only things u need to boot up on xp nicely are:

* ScanRegistry
* TaskMonitor
* SystemTray
* LoadPowerProfile

Yea, well what about explorer, there's no use even having windows, if you never boot up your windows explorer... I'm also pretty sure, it's a good idea to have a few more things running, like your .NET, VetMsg, RunDLL32, Services, WINLogon, System, System Idle Process, I have SVCHOST running (I don't know if that's good or not), and a lot more process that windows needs to have to run. I really wouldn't mess around with your boot up process, unless you completely know that they are not required (I.E. iPod.exe, or FIREFOX.exe).

Actually, things like Winlogon you can turn off if you have your own task manager(Like Process Manager) that won't stop you from ending those processes. There's a certain order you have to shut them off in, too, otherwise Windows tries to shut your computer down. I used to have a website that went into each of the main XP processes and told you what they did, if and how you can safely shut it down, etc., that would be nice, but I've lost it. Anyway, you may actually want to turn your anti-virus off and see if your computer gets any faster. Personally, I've never seen a system that can run Norton without slowing down quite a bit. To me, I'd rather just get the viruses and have them slow my computer down instead of having the Anti-Virus slow it down, since those can be removed with some work. Besides, gives you good troubleshooting experience. Besides, running without one should teach you how to not get viruses. I mean, I haven't had a virus in the last couple years.

I don't run Norton. I run Kaspersky and NOD32. I run Zoen Alarm Pro as my firewall.

The Symantec Enterprise anti-virus that is issued to all incoming Virginia Tech students slows down top of the line computers to a crawl, so all of my friends and I got rid of it.

I know Norton sucks. I had it once. They make you PAY a yearly subscription. That's even after you BUY the software. It sucked in general. It couldn't remove a lot fo viruses even though I updated every 3 days.

I found a solution, free of course. http://free-av.com.
I never get viruses, but I like to let a guard run just in case. I sometimes get warez and so I like to have some sort of protection outside of firefox.

Old people BUY software. They spend hundreds on all kind of stuff you can get free, better quality. Free german software is the best you can get.

To anyone who buys anti-viruses or anti-spyware stuff, try taking a look at snapfiles.com or download.com. You can get better stuff for free.

Them Israelis over at CheckPoint make some good security stuff, I'd certainly rather have them write my software instead of some lazy donutboy American who went to some technical school and doesn't really know or care about what he's doing
